They used to though, and thinking about it, they flashed red, not orange.
They do still flash red when they're broken - means "Treat as four way
    stop".
Well yes - I grew up there and it was fairly standard practice to treat red
lights at night as four way stops where it was reasonably safe to do so -
    especially if
anyone happened to be lurking in the general vicinity.

Lots and lots of accidents though with drunk people deciding that
intersections were safe even though traffic happened to be in them at the
    time....

  2. That would depend, just pointing out that on an occasion when I got stuck at
a red I narrowly avoided the old bill collecting me when I finally went
    through.

And Italy, with a similar disregard for red lights or any other
mandatory regulation sign during the day ... ;)

But new laws are on the way (e.g.. points on licences .. shock ..
horror), which will be similarly disregarded.

  5. JP will doubtless know the truth of this, but I recall hearing that a
roadworks traffic light has no force in law unless certain conditions
are met regarding its public notification and the Home Secretary signing
    off on it.

Of course, it might be total bollocks.

I am told by a local (my ex-SWMBO) that this is the bridge used by the
    Great Train Robbers.

Were they practising by holding up narrowboats? Or did they plan a
    get-away at 4mph in a barge?

The bridge they used is pretty close though, within a mile or 2 I'd say.
Anyway, somewhere between/betwixt Cheddington & Leighton Buzzard.
