Any owners of adventure bikes, as the marketing men insist they are now
called, should be aware that Metzeler Tourance tyres are currently in short
    supply, again.

I'd just got used to supply meeting demand[0] when Metzeler decide to
discontinue the HR speed rated tyre as it is not fitted to any new bikes as
OE[1]. However, they did not consider that ramping up production of the VR
tyre would be a good idea.

I only needed a rear Tourance for my holiday next week. I've decided to get
a pair of Avons as I don't want to chance mixing brands for such a long
trip. I had the choice of Michelin Anakee too, but they are £30 dearer.

The Avons have a good reputation so, assuming I am happy with them,
Metzeler [2] can go **** themselves as far as future business is concerned.

[0] a flook rather than sound economics methinks
[1] it was OE on thousands of R11xxGS in the last decade
[2] I hope Avon & Metzeler do not have the same parent company

I've been using the Avon Distanzia's on my F650 and have found them
    fine.

I'm going to get new tyres put on tomorrow, my local shop has advised
trying the Continental Escapes, they look OK (anyone tried 'em yet) ..
They do them in R11xxGS sizes I think

Steve Parry emerged from their own little world to say
No. They have featured in the Conti catalogue for about 2 years but they
have not been available until recently due to some technical issue AFAIK.
Their TKC80s are well liked by GS riders as an off-road tyre that is
excellent on-road. Hopefully the Escapes will be as good. Report back..

I have Anakees on the V and they are very impressive. I've yet to have any
unprovoked slides etc. Wear rate seems good as well.

I have heard favourable reports too. I'll give the Avons a go as there is a
price differential in addition to, admittedly not very many, good reports.

    Don't Pirelli own Metzeler?

    Yes. But who owns Pirelli.....

    <googles>

Bollocks. Seems like the owners of Avon & Pirelli have a "strategic
alliance" even going as far as reciprocal product rebadging.

Incidentally, the Pirelli equivalent of the Tourance has gone into short
supply as I imagine the wholesalers are persuading customers to take them
    as alternatives.
