Toshiba Gigabeat MP3 player

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Corfield, Aug 5, 2005.

  1. Toshiba's Gigabeat MP3 player - anyone got one, used one? Any comments
on how good / bad / indifferent they are?

I'm contemplating entering the 21st century for portable music players
and the Gigabeat looks rather good.

Not seen one, but my money would either go on a Creative Labs Zen, or
    an iRiver H320 / 340.

    Compare and contrast.

I got my daughter (she bought it from her birthday money) a Creative zen
    20gb from amazon for £150
    It's brilliant.

That's be my one good reason for not buying one, not that I know what

I dunno about the other stuff but my iRiver 320 is effectively a tiny

I bought one for my daughter about a month ago - she's very happy with
it. It was a choice between that and the Creative Zen. She wanted
the Tosh on the basis of the nice colour screen.

I set it up for her (and have hardly seen it since) and it seemed easy
to use, looks good and has a quality feel to it. Good sound quality
    too.

The software is a bit rubbish, but it's workable.

iPod. It has the best selection of accessories.

Don't buy anything with copy protection on. If you can't just drag'n'drop
mp3's etc onto it, forget it.

There's no problem with players that have copy protection built in.

Its the ones that will *only* play copy protected content that everyone
should avoid like the plague. But thats fairly easy, as AFAIK there
aren't any. My Ipod lets me stuff any old MP3 on it and it'll play it
    happily.

  12. I'm obviously being daft but why would choice of accessories be a
consideration? I just want the thing to listen to music on. Why buy a
product that needs accessories for it to be fully useful?

Various reviews I've read suggest IPods fall to pieces after a few
months and are not as wonderful as the hype would suggest.

From what I've seen they're well made, but the fact that the battery
will hold far less charge 12 months on and is a return to factory
replacement job is reason enough to go for something with a replacable
    battery.

Mine's 16 months old, still has the same battery life as it did when I
bought it and hasn't fallen apart yet. Build quality is excellent -
although the chrome finish back is looking a bit scratched. I use it
almost every day in the car.

The accessories are well worth taking into consideration - everything
from little clip-on FM transmitters through digital camera media readers
to very nice quality 'docking stations' / amplified speakers which can
be handy when you go on holiday.

  15. we bought Jennifer one in March. its recently been exchanged by Apple
for a new one. She is very happy with it though and distraught when it
    went bump.

I bought an archos gmini xs20 which I'd happily recommend but that
doesn't seem to be made anymore. the newer stuff can be found here

I thought that but bought one anyway because I wanted a new toy. Now
I just connect it to an auxiliary input on the car stereo can carry my
entire record collection in the car with me.

Because you might go on vacation, and you might want a fold-flat
speaker/charger setup so you can have some music with you on vacation
without lugging a few hundred CDs. Or you can take it to work and put
    it on your desk.

You might want an FM transmitter to play your iPod in the car (if you
    had one).

You might want any number of plastic or leather cases.

You might want other stuff that doesn't immediately spring to mind.
    Mine have both been fine.

    As has mine.

It's worth getting an iPod just for the pleasure of opening the packaging,
    IMO
