I'd probably go for the sporty 'zetec' spec, even in a diesel.

I use aircon maybe 20 days a year, and value stickier[1] tyres and
firmer suspension over just about any luxury they can put in a car. I
hate electronic route planners, and don't like faux wooden finishes. I
may just get a basic one though, as I don't see the point in
contributing more of my own cash into what will be essentially a
workhorse, when it could equally go towards 2 wheels...

[1] and less "cheapo fleet-tyre" wheel size friendly.

I sort of feel that we're in an "end of days" phase but then again I've
not been feeling particularly chipper of late so maybe it's just me.

However the question of "does it matter if it's 10 or 1000 generations"
interests me (vaguely). If it's 10 generations then that concerns me.
I can still talk to people in my family who can remember five
generations back (from me) or at least have stories about them. I've
plenty of 'knowledge' of three generations back and this makes 10
generations forwards a bit too painful to think about; I would hope my
Children/Grandchildren etc. have a chance to have a life with the
    opportunities and challenges I've had.

If, however, it's 1,000 generations then I'm not that concerned; isn't
that about 2,500 years or so (probably more) so there's plenty of scope
for them to find a way out of whatever disaster awaits us.

I've always grown up thinking this, I suspect I'm not alone.
Here we differ, my father knows nothing more than my grandfathers
history due to the fact my grandfather ran away from home very young.
From where I am I sometimes wonder what a difference having kids puts
onto one's perspective, and in some ways hope I don't find out.
So, essentially your concern is about family lineage, rather than just
the human race in general, yes?

This isn't a dig, BTW. I'm trying to understand what it is that makes
everyone think the way they do based on our circumstances. I tend to
just think in the context of "me" as it's the only thing my decisions
    really effect.

I'm sure that as humans we're almost designed to self destruct by doing
something that benefits others, or leaves a glorious ending, at least
that's a romanticised view I settle for, but I never have figured out
other people's reasons for doing what they do.

    them too.

But we have a very different experience to those of 10 generations ago. 10
forward could be back to the iron age or a techno utopia, as long as they
can eke out some happiness from it it doesn't matter. Whether they have oil
or not does not matter either IMHO.
The upper limit I mentioned was ten thousand not one thousand. HS isn't
going to leave this solar system en masse so it's going to end messily at
    some point.

Well I've similar information on my Grandmothers side (on one side of my
    family).
Not really. Through looking backwards I get a feeling about what the
distance in time is, I find this easier in terms of generations than
years; anything more than, say, 80-100 years is beyond my comprehension
    since I'll never see that.
I think it's because I've got Children and hence my brain is slightly
    addled.
I doubt that we're designed to do any more than scrabble around in the
    darkness.

Well, maybe. I can appreciate 10 generations but not 10,000. I'm not
convinced that it'll end messily, I guess I'm being unreasonably
optimistic. I read Nevil Shute's "On the Beach" recently which seemed
as clean an end as any.

  9. So where does LPG and H2 come from then?

IIRC the best way of producing hydrogen is by electrolysis for which
you need to generate electricity in the first place. As for LPG it's
maybe cleaner than petrol but worse that newer diesels and probably
not enough to power all road vehicles on.

  14. Most H2 is produced by methods other than electrolysis.
It may be the most ideal method but that's all that's going for it. Most
H2 is produced from derivatives of fossil fuel.
You currently only get LPG as a by-product of petroleum refining.

There are a couple of things to note about French speed Cameras.

    1. They *have* to have some form of indication about the radar that has
been postionned. i.e. There has to be a panel at *least* 500m (IIRC)
    before the camera itself.

    2. The position of all speed cameras in France have to be publicy
available, so you know where they are.

  17. I think this may have gone over the top of many heads. Especially the
fact that many of the loopholes/specials for the boys aimed at the rich
have been established or maintained by the left. It's all down to paying
your debts for the support to get you in to power and forget the
    election manifesto.

For the party faithful who may be upset by the above just change 'left'
for 'right' and it still applies.

I aint complaining. I use one of labours introduced 'fiddles for the
rich' to benefit my own meagre savings.
