Tories tackle speed camera rules

  1. But I do wish we had a decent public transport system. Consecutive
governments have told us to get on our bikes to get work. Now we have
done that they tell us to use our bikes less because of some Kyoto
agreement. But of course without thinking about reality again. All the
local shops are now out of town. We have a local train to the local
town. But it's all tumbleweed these days. The council allowed a retail
outlet to be opened on the motorway junction, along with a supermarket
and cinema. You have to catch a bus into town and then another one out
again. Bloody daft planning as usual. I was under the impression that
local towns where the places where these types of places where supposed
    to be grouped...

    Winge over...

I was born in Oakham, an infant in Cottesmore (Rutland) and Limassol
(Cyprus), grew up in Lincolnshire [1] and was plagued by debilitating
    asthma.

Which improved when I moved to Worthing/Brighton in 1977. Then
deteriorated when I lived in Steyning, rural Sussex (1980). It was the
fucking bane of my life until about 1984.

    In IT, yes.

However I'm not a developer and most of my recent experience lies in
infrastructure design and networking (I can do 'hands-on' techie work
but it doesn't seem to really pay any more.) - this kind of limits the
local jobs I could go for.

I guess re-skilling into something else less specific like generic
project management is an option, but inertia and the thought of being
    financially worse off deter me.

He was an MD of one of Nokia's companies. A lot of emails circulated
about that one at the time... Strangely few people within Nokia wanted
to say anything via email about it, something to do with the Finnish
sense of humour or management style I assume.

Once it develops that does seem to be the case sometimes. They should live
    somewhere else.
Congestion arises because we don't build on enough greenbelt, we don't build
big enough roads and we let too many people swan around the country.
Or it could be because businesses do not diversify in location and freight
transport is not optimised in any way.
Both of the later would require some common sense govmint so I'm not
    optimistic.

I'd not live in another town through choice. I like living in the
Countryside. I appreciate the peace and quiet, I like being able to
walk outside and see stars without excessive light pollution, I like
being able to let my dog out without needing to worry about roads and
other people; and this is a very short list.

I've lived in cities and I've lived in the country, I know what suits me
best and wouldn't presume to tell anyone that their view was invalid on
    this matter.

Oh, and the Robert Elms article is full of shit. He's a typical fucking
journo; what's his background? I seem to remember listening to him on
loose ends in the early 90s but since then what? he's undoubtedly done a
little telly and what-not but I don't believe he has the experience to
write an article that discusses the issues with farming and the
rights/wrongs of subsidy; he doesn't mention anywhere that farming's a
rigged market where farmers are told what they can grow/farm and can't
and need to purchase quotas to farm certain products. The UK has not
been self sufficient in eggs and dairy products and yet we agreed to cut
our production as part of the "rebate" settlement that Margaret Thatcher
agreed; basically our farmers were sold down the river to the benefit of
everyone else. That article's made me quite cross actually- I always
thought he was a twat so I'm glad I read it and confirmed my suspicions.

What an unfair thing to say, I just voice an opinion if I have some
knowledge or experience and I pass on 95% of threads. Sometimes right
sometimes not and (the beauty of it) sometimes one learns some more.
It's run at a profit *with* subsidy!
It might be if the services were worth a **** and in the case of trains if
the subsequent fares were in any way reasonable.
The only PT systems I know of that work (in totality) even slightly are the
    tubes in London and Glasgow.

As they will... until they get unseated and the dirt comes out.

I don't think that any of the convicted Tories did anything *that* bad
in the overall scheme of things and I wouldn't be surprised to see some
of our current cabinet convicted of crimes of a similar magnitude.

Face it, to get to Cabinet Minister level you've got to be pretty
fucking clever. If you'd stuck in industry you'd probably have a nice
cosy executive directorship and a couple of non-executive ones and a
large bank balance. Whilst the political gig pays better than it did
it's not really that well paid for the calibre of people it needs, so if
they choose to compensate their salary... who can really be surprised?
They're dealing with the rich and powerful in industry day in day out as
their peers and just want to get their bit of it.
