So my guess of $4,000 was close (add oil and filter and an air filter and
Yup pretty much on the mark (especially the beer part!)

Your right too Damian - This was a great learning experience (I just wish
the outcome didnt cost so much) and its boosted my confidence a hell of alot
to pull out my trusty socket set in the future and perhaps fix things I used
    to pay for :)

My bike was my main transport though unfortunatly, but I should be able to
save enough for a engine in about 4 months (god 4 months of walking to work)
and then lookout! Not only will I be back on the road but I will know enough
mechanically to be extremely dangerous to my new engine!

    Regards
    Daniel

Not the liner, but the NiCaSil coating (like virtually all new engine
designs to emerge since the late 90's, the 1st-generation R6 doesn't run
    steel liners in the block).

But, yes, it's pretty unusual for the coating to fail. I suspect further
disassembly will reveal one of the rings to have gone snap, got itself
wedged between the piston and the bore and scored the coating.

Time to find out where all the RGV fetishists send their cylinders to
get recoated and make a phone call to enquire whether they've ever done
    an integrated block on a four-cylinder four-stroke.

Whatever else might be the case, the piston in that photo is only good
to be flipped over and used as an ashtray.

On a 5-year-old bike he's pulled apart himself? No chance.

"You did that with a screwdriver, you did," they'll say pointing at the
    crack in the cylinder coating.

It would cost him nothing to send them an e-mail.
