Ummm ... you do know that the actual problem was almost certainly just
an electrickery doohickey somewhere, most likely the rec/reg?

I'm assuming you wanted to pull the head off anyway for some other
reason, but the engine looks reasonable to me. Was it down on
    compression?

Oh, and do what BT says and go buy some proper sockets. No, it's not
worth only buying two good ones, every time you go to do anything you'll
    discover the one you're missing.
valve lapping & new valve guides is a pretty cheap job, may as well do
it since you're about to pay for a new head gasket anyway.
Oh, cast-in cylinders. Put it all back together and ride the damned thing
till it explodes, it's just not worth the hassle.

Could it be needle leaking onto my cylinder overnite and contaminating the
    oil with fuel?

I pulled the needles out of each carby and 2 of them seem to have a point at
which the needle tapers about a cm from the end, can just feel this when you
rub your fingers up and down it
    http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r261/donked/needles.jpg
cylinder1 & 4 have small taper, needle 2 included for comparison feels
smooth along the entire length (needle 3 smooth too).

    Cheers
Daniel (crossing fingers this might end up cheap)

Depends if the fuel system required vaccum to open the tank petcock..
if it does then you didn't find the answer you needed . no motor
running no fuel ( unless it leaks)

Hmm Im not sure if it needs a vacuum or not (its a 01 r6) Im sorry for all
these dumb questions - but since its dumb question week I will throw another
into the arena as I've just noticed somthing funny about my airbox. If you
    look here http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r261/donked/airboxoverflow.jpg
You will notice the airbox has a drain tube thats been blocked. Shouldnt
this be plumbed to the hose joiner below which runs to a small oil
    container?
At the moment, any excess oil in the airbox seems to have been draining
straight into carby 1 (since Ive had the bike at least so nearly 2years?)

    Cheers
Daniel (will get my valves lapped too I guess)

Im trying to find more info, but Im led to believe my bike may use a
"revolutionary way of doing away with liners and plating direct to bore" (at
least in the 03 models trying to find info on my 01) anybody know what a
engines worth roughly? less than $4 k would be good

    Cheers

No idea about the cost . best you ring some wreckers and there should be
some way on the nett of getting quoted from further away ( there is for
    car parts)

It would be possible to sleeve the cylinder but the cost maybe prohibitive.

now this is where you park the bike in the shed and keep watching ebay

    or more specifically
    www.motorcycledisposals.com.au
    www.fowles.com.au
    www.pickles.com.au

and you wait till a bike comes along

friend did the same with a F4i after a rod exited stage left

picked up a bike from the disposals $1900

most of the bike had dibs on the parts before she got it home

you could easily offload the parts through forums, ebay or
    www.formula-xtreme.com.au

dunno wether its worth an email to yamaha with pics just an enquiry of why
    is it so ?

Agreed, contact Yamaha first, they may come to the party for some of the
    cost.

It's a pretty weird one, yeah. Anyway, it'll give you something to do
while you look for a new engine ...

Cheers for everybodys help, guess I better start keeping a eye on ebay and
those auctions as suggested (once I have the $$ anyway) I priced a engine
down at "metropolotin motorcycle spares" in sydney and its about $3800
standalone engine or $3200 if I give em mine as a exchange.

    Regards and best wishes

So my guess of $4,000 was close (add oil and filter and an air filter and a
slab or 2 and $4,000 was spot on).

On a positive note, you can feel pretty good about not having wasted
time stripping the engine chasing nothing! Dunno if that helps much
    tho...

On a better positive note, think about how much more you know about
engine internals than a week ago. As much as it might piss you off
dealing with the problems caused, that sort of experience is priceless
    for us non-mechanical types. :)
