  2. so the drugs and alcohol policy at work wasn't an issue in terms of
    restricting your consumption anyway?

IME the D&A policy coupled with shifts can make matters worse as it
encourages binge drinking then (work related) abstinence.

This coupled with the fact I don't drive trains that often ATM [1] as I'm
more or less full time release.

It was so easy to have a couple of pints on the way home that
metamorphosed into "taxi from the last train covered in kebab fluids"
adventures. These, sometimes solo, destructive, can't have one pint,
events were also becoming more common.

So I stopped going for "a quick pint" now only drink socially and within
carefully watched wine at home limits (IYSWIM).

[1] Trade Union duties, a macho drinking culture if ever there was one.

This was my undoing. I stopped drinking for a month in early 200, er,
either 2001 or 2002 (my memory's not too good these days, probably for
the same reason) because I realised I was knocking back about 180 units
a week which my doc thought was a bit on the high side.

By the end of that month my tolerance was through the floor but I was
still hanging around with the same people, drinking at the same rate,
the net result being I spent just as much but rather than being an
amiable drunk I was completely paralytic.

And then I had a nervous breakdown. Result!

    I'm better now, though.

Not when you're trying to move away from 'drinking in the evening
to numb the pain' to 'drinking in the evening to avoid eating' it
    isn't! ;)

    Eeek!

I just roughly calculated my current intake to be a little over 50 units
per week (on average 2 pints of 6+%abv ale a day, most days) which is, er,
not good, apparantly (max recommended figure seems to be around 28 units
    per week for men).

    Crap.

I still don't know how to accurately equate drink with units, other than
a single shot of spirit is about 1 unit.

What's a bottle of wine for example. 5 or 6 units?

If so, christ that's a *lot* of drink you were getting through.

One of my underlings at the time was a good mate and was/is something of an
alky. We'd pop out for a couple of pints for lunch, work the afternoon in
a bit of a haze and then head straight for the pub after work, knock back
10 pints or so, have a few chasers and go home. Next day we'd come in still
pissed, pop out for a couple of pints for lunch...

    And then there was weekends.

Fortunately the CTO at the time was from a city banking background (and
has since gone back to that) so was very much of the work-hard-play-hard
mindset and didn't mind how plastered we were so long as he got what he
    wanted.

It eventually got to the point where a quiet night in would consist of
a bottle of JD for me and a bottle (or more) of vodka for me, at which
point I figured it was possibly time to knock it on the head.

    Happy days!

Just been working it out a bottle of 12% wine is 7 units. I normally drink
a bottle of wine most nights and have a few beers on Friday or Saturday
night so that's 50ish for me then. 180 units is like 3 and a bit bottles of
    wine each and every night....

  14. I thought it was 6 or 7, depending on the %.

    but
    http://www.ex.ac.uk/cimt/dictunit/ccalcoh2.htm

puts it at 10 for a 14% bottle of wine...

When I have to think about it, a pint of "session" beer (4%) is
about 2 units, and the bottle of Old Peculiar I had last night
is probably 3.5, maybe 4 units.

Hmm I'm guessing until I stopped I was in the 50-60 units a week band
then, but also drinking a lot in one go on a Saturday.

    Its easily done.
(No that's not a chest beating, look at me statement.)

A long time ago I used to have a pint or two at dinner time during the
week. Call for a couple of pints with the boss on the way home. Go
out in the evening for several beers. Saturday and Sunday lunch would
be in the pub and we'd go to Town on Friday and Saturday night.

As your tolorance levels increase, you are having an extra pint, then
another so that you go home in the plesantly pissed state you want to.

Then you skip going home for tea and grab something to eat at the pub,
kebab shop or don't bother eating. Aye, it's easy enough.

After a while you get used to going out, so when someone suggests a
club on Wednesday night it's not a problem. You don't feel rough in
the morning, well you do, but it's so long since you felt good you
don't remember and just accept that this is how the day starts.

When I added it all up I was proabably drinking about 80+ pints a
week. At 2 units a pint, thats 160+ units a week.

When I look back at that time, I reckon that there probably wasn't a
time during the week when I was technically allowed to drive. And
this phase of my life lasted for about a year.

Nowadays I don't drink at home (funnily enough I never did), and
typically only go out Friday and/or Saturday evening.

Roughly 2 units a pint but it depends on the %.
Around that. Most bottles of wine seem to have it on the back.

1 unit is 10ml of alcohol, so a 500ml can of 5% lager (Stella or
Kronenbourg, say) is 2.5 units and a 70cl bottle of 11% wine is
    7.7 units...
