TOG, Bob Scott, Pete Fisher and TMack. Got the bastard eventually with a variation of the broom handle technique. Instead of that I used a piece of mouse moulding you would use for going round the edge of a laminate floor. It had a semicircular top with two bevelled edges. This was a nice fit after the application of a hammer to get it a couple of inches down, locked it in the vice... result. The second fork came apart no problem. Thank you chaps.
