Apparently it's part of the licence of the vendor rather than of
any law applied to the purchaser.

    * A maximum of two 5 litre plastic containers, or
    * A maximum of two 10 litre metal containers, or
    * One 23 litre Metal ('Jerry') Can

At least, that's according to BP:

We had a little grey Fergie T20. Petrol/TVO job. We bought it for £200 in
1980. Sold the KDD183 number plate for £175. Used it for 5 years and sold
it for £150, needing at least new piston rings.

The Fergie became redundant because we had access to modern International
tractors with 80hp engines & power steering. **** character when you can be
sat on a comfy seat in a warm cab with no risk of the steering kicking back
when you drive over a tree stump.
