Oooh, well, there are plenty projects that can let you install a
    computer in your car :)

OTOH given the integration, how comfortable do you feel downloading some
random app that might just stop your brakes from working? :)
Now that one I don't know. Pretty sure you could build one, though, but
that's not the same thing, really :)

That would be a pretty cool idea. It's probably only a matter of time
until there is a waterproof, Android device, though.

I reckon Audi have not very much to do with the price, though ICBW, natch.

Well, the existing closed stuff has plenty of security holes - there was
an article the other month about how some research group had found a way
of getting root access on a Lexus by playing an MP3 with a buffer-
    overflow exploit in it.
There's already waterproof android devices: motorola make one. But the
touchscreen is a bit of a problem with gloves on, of course.

I dunno - rooting might seem like fun when you're drunk but might end up
with red faces all round the next day.

Yeah, there was something I saw just yesterday. But opening it up to
    *users* would be fatal :)

    So did I.
No, you have an opinion, largely based on personal preference.

    <confused>
    does any other count

Nige bought the Garmin. He doesn't like the routes it chooses either.
OTOH the FM traffic service is good.

It often chose really really stupid routes

Lexus rooting embarrassment may be ameliorated if the windows are
    sufficiently tinted, Shirley.

The data that people are getting wound up about was to do with speed and
location, but not identity. That information made it to the police, and
they used it to work out where people were most likely to break the
speed limit and set up speed traps.

The data was collected by the satnav device (how I wish I could get rid
of the trip statistics feature) and if the user selected the 'share
information anonymously with TomTom' option when setting things up, it
    was then uploaded.

Aah. ISTR seeing something like that when I downloaded my free map
update. I probably agreed to it.

I doubt they'd get much useful out of my data, though.
