    What's the advantage of cork?

  6. It makes that lovely squeaky sound and then a lovely full-rounded pop
that signals to all and sundry that a brand new full bottle has just
been opened, and that you're going to have a good time.

Yes I like screw tops but they need to build in a release noise!!

That's not a very regular occurence though, is it? Not IMO anyway.

The pro-corkers can only seem to muster up the "it lets wine breathe"
argument which to me is only really relevant for wine that is to be
laid down for a long period. And that will never, and I mean *never*,
    affect me )

Plus another advantage to screw tops is they work when you're too
    pissed to use a corkscrew.

I was given a corkscrew that played 'we wish you a merry Christmas'[1]
    so it shouldn't be impossible.

[1] Fortunately the batteries went flat [2]
[2] For values of flat defined by 'pounded repeatedly with a 16lb lump
    hammer'

I can recall that happening about twice, and that includes the tastings
    I attend with my supplier.

TBF he has had a couple of cases he's recalled cos they had a batch of
dodgy corks, but that's about it.

But what happens when you're too pissed to use a screw cap?!

I get something like three or four 'off' bottles a year. Not always
due to the cork, and in 99% of cases it's cheap plonk (i.e. less than
5 EU) so I view it as disposable anyway. Which is fine as long as
    there's more in the cellar.

But TBH the main cause of wine going off, chez nous, is stuff that
gets 'lost' in the cellar, like some quite good Viognier, which as a
white is best between one and three years old. Drinking it three years
later than that it's definitely past its best.

Had a close call with a particular favourite Bergerac. We'd been saving
it cos we knew it was the last. Cracked a bottle and realised we'd best
drink the rest of the case pretty sharpish.

    Hard life, really.

No cellar? Or do you just mean you never buy enough at one time to not
    have space in the kitchen?
