TOG, Wegg, etc etc and bike repairs!

  1. My old MZ Supa Five certainly did once. I know I've told this once
    before, but....

I'd just rebuilt it (new crank) and went down the road to the petrol
    station. First shakedown run.

As I turned into the forecourt, it started dying. I frantically twisted
the grip and it picked up. Let the clutch out and it shot backwards into
    the traffic.

    I was utterly, absolutely, shellshocked.

I'd got the timing wrong, and as it was dying, it had basically bounced
off compression, and re-started, running backwards.

I wouldn't have believed it if someone else had told me it could happen.
    But it did.

Early E model RDs did too, because Yamaha in their wisdom mounted the
Cdi unit with the cabling poking upwards right in front of the rear
wheel. in heavy rain the bike could stutter at traffic lights and run
backwards. They were unofficially recalled and mounted the other way up
    with a wiring loom extension.

My D did too once. That was the day I discovered I couldn't reach the
ground whilst sat on the tank.

One of my TS 150s was happily running ready for me to set off for work
and as I wound open the throttle and dumped the clutch it shot backwards
and put a great big dent in the car's door (surprise, surprise, a Saab
    900).

    Hooray for shoddy maintenance.

I seem to remember that being used as a cheap way to provide
reverse on a bubble car or two.

Serves you right for setting the points closer to TDC, instead of the
factory settings. The RD400C and D ran out of power 500 revs higher at
1.8 BTDC instead of the factory 2.3mm and the power came in harder at
6500 revs too. You didn't want to take it much closer though or the risk
    of detonation was too high.

Good grief the cases appear to be milled from solid or at least a very
rough blank. The finishing on the crankshafts and rods is a joy to
    behold though.
