TOG, Wegg, etc etc and bike repairs!

  1. That is the most sick and perverted site I've seen in a long time.

    The TS3 engine appeals, though. Didja ever see the Bentley lookalike
    powered by a TS3 engine? Some mad bugger built it a few years back.

    I am given to understand that it was a concept lifted wholesale from one

    road, and it makes an amazing noise.

    Not sure. The only Foden I ever knew well was the one which delivered
    our coal in the 'forties and early 'fifties, and it was missing its
    ashpan, so cyclists had to beware finding hot cinders on the road it had
    travelled...

    I liked it, and the flue which came out of the cab roof.

  12. One of the best sounds of the era that was -provided you didn't live near a
    hill on a trunk road and have them going by all night.
    I believe that the piston crowns were wont to become detached, but all would
    be well until the engine stopped. It just wouldn't start again...

  13. I gather they had temperature issues - ran much hotter than the more typical
    5LW Gardner or similar of the period and had to be cooled down by running at
    idle for a few minutes when it had been running hard. failure to do this
    was supposed to lead to thermal stresses that buggered the engine.

    It struggled with the noise regs in its day. Later ones had four
    silencers in series. I was playing with TS3s a few weeks ago - I was
    the person who knew the secret of how to start one. You tell people and
    they don't believe you at first, but it works and it doesn't take long
    to work out why it works. And it is... get someone to put their hand
    over the exhaust pipe while you crank it over.

    Ipswich Transport Museum has one. It's a flat bed, ex Green & Skinner,
    an Ipswich haulier who ran several of them. There's also an engine on
    display. Cranfields in Ipswich used TS3s - mostly artics. As they
    reached the end of their life they were used for shunting round Ipswich
    Docks. Many years ago, when I was in the Ipswich Transport Preservation
    Group, we bought one of these tractor units and converted it to a
    breakdown truck. Despite all it had been through in its life up to
    then, it still gave excellent service dragging trolleybuses out of
    fields - the engine seemed pretty much unbreakable. It would pull well
    at a tickover too. Which brings us to a classic 2-smoke story (I've
    told it before, but I think it was in another place):

    We were shifting buses about and towing buses with a rope, dotting them
    around a car park while we sorted out the best order to pack them away
    in a big building we rented. Several of us standing about, Colin
    driving the TS3, I can't remember who was in the bus. Colin gets out of
    the TS3 while it's still trundling slowly forward, strolls back to the
    bus and asks the driver where he'd like to stop. "Here will do" say the
    driver, and put the bus's brake on. The TS3 tries to keep pulling, but
    gives up and stalls ... but the tension in the rope pulls it back and
    the engine starts up again running backwards. As the TS3 accelerates
    towards the bus there's a general scramble as everybody runs to pull the
    engine stop. Colin got there first...

    Lots of 2-smokes will run backwards, but the TS3 is a bit different
    because the blower becomes a sucker. Air is drawn up the exhaust pipe
    and the exhaust blows out of the air filters. If the floor panels don't
    fit too well, the cab quickly fills with smoke.
