They allowed people to live a dream they should never have been allowed
near but it was the government that let them do it.
Should they pay above the laid out rates that we (1) all have to pay
our taxes at or should they be singled out because of previous
mistakes? Keep in mind the fact that if working in the banking sector
means paying extra tax a lot of people will work elsewhere and we'll
end up with even bigger idiots.
Do you think that all companies should pay more corporate taxes and if
so have you given any though to the impact that will have on people
considering setting up in business for themselves?

    (1) Apart from those special people who think that because they're
contractors it's ok to pay an accountant to find as many ways as they
can to avoid paying the same taxes as the rest of us.

(M J Carley) gurgled happily, sounding much like they
    were saying:
    40% income tax.

  3. They also say that a similar figure is unclaimed on tax returns ,
    benefit claims etc

I didn't mention 24bn. I was point out that you can get an estimate of
    how much tax is uncollected.
I didn't say that either. It was Labour's fault, because Labour was
`pro-business' and in favour of light-touch or self regulation. Now
it's the coalition's because they have the power to do something
about it and they are firing tax staff.
So if a company doesn't pay its taxes, it's the fault of HMRC?
It denies you the pleasure of claiming I get my information from lefty
    rags.

    were saying:
Well, yes, actually - it is.

HMR&C should be putting the fear of god up businesses that don't pay.
They should be kicking arse, with penalties and interest, until they DO
pay - or the company admits they're insolvent.
    Very true.

28%. Remember they declare quite a bit of income as capital gains.

The capital gains tax regime was described by the chancellor as one of
the "most chaotic" tax regimes that it had inherited.

"Some of the richest people in this country have been able to pay less
tax than the people who clean for them," he said.

He said that some people had taken advantage of the system by turning
some of their income into capital and paying less tax as a result.

  8. Treat others as you expect to be treated; pretty much what I've done. I
don't expect others to pay for me, that's my responsibility.

  10. As others have said, the same as the rest of us.
I don't know what they paid, I know that they moved their centre of
operations to Switzerland for tax reasons.

I'm sure you've got the time to google the details.

  11. You need to translate: "goms"?

And you're pushing a wheelchair surely you could just drive it into the
    goms' shins?

  12. The relevance to the budget is completely missing and is another figure
to the quoted 24Bn I was responding to.
Right, so it's the coalition's fault.
    Or businesses fault.

Nice to see you quoting the Daily Mail.

The quote is from George Osborne when he introduced the 28% CGT rate
    in last year's budget.

It's supposed to be a Labour party.
The labour of the people who work in those businesses, and in the
public services the businesses depend on, pays for everything.
So was Labour `pro-business' or not? It gave business what it said it
wanted: less, lighter, regulation and lower taxes. Where was the
economic mismanagement, from your point of view? (I know where it was
    from mine.)

    Not necessarily.
I think they have other ways of minimizing their taxable income and/or
    the tax rate applied.
Take it up with George Osborne. He said it.

Absolutely. My inference was simply that exaggerations like SD's
    hardly aid rational discussion.

  19. It's certainly the key reason I work: If I inherited a fortune tomorrow
then I'd see out my notice - the company isn't a bad place to work and I
wouldn't want a load of legal hassle - and I'd then piss off into the
sunset, never to darken their floor again.

Anything I'd do after that would be strictly a hobby, not work as such.
