  1. ....been polishing off the squiggly line of black spray paint that adorned
the side of my car this morning. Looks like some brainless twat has wandered
the length of the road but decided only to spray the silver or white cars
    for some reason.

Bear emerged from their own little world to say
Garages are for all that important stuff like fridges, tumble dryers and
    empty packing cases.

istr a picture from the '87 storm, which showed a block of garages (40
or so) with the corrugated roof blown off. All full, not one motor
vehicle in any of them. North London, I think.

  6. Somewhere in Kent - Medway Valley, IIRC - the council started building
flats for two-person occupancy. Well, single mums, more like. They bult
garages for the houses as well, and then discovered that nobody used the
garages for cars but used them as sheds.

And the cars parked on the street became a nightmare. Lots of little
    flats: not enough road space.

So (allegedly) they started building *double* garages for flats that
would only be occupied by one adult. Go figure.

I remember seeing an episode of Watchdog where a woman had bought a
    brand new house from plans.

It had a single garage built in.

She moved in and found she couldn't get her Mondeo into the garage.
Well, she could but she had about an inch all round so couldn't get
    out.

They spoke to the developer who stated that they now built garages to
by used as washing machine/fridge/etc rooms rather than to put cars in
because that's what most people use them for. So they made them
smaller to save space on the plot.

Watchdog then suggested that they call them a "utility room" rather
than a "garage" if you couldn't get a bog standard car in.

I could _just_ get my old Spider in our garage in Milton Keynes, or an
Alfa 33. When I bought the 75, it wouldn't fit. Currently, I could get
the Golf in ours, but not at the same time as the VFR. I'll have
absolutely no chance getting the Passat in there.

I've got a single garage in a block for my flat. I get the bike,
Civic and work bench in there. Chap over from me puts his Mondeo in
    with room to spare.

To me, a garage simply isn't a garage unless you can comfortably get a
Mondeo sized car in. In fact it's one of my criteria that must be
filled whenever I buy a house.

Lofts/cupboards are for storage, kitchens/utility rooms are for white
goods, sheds are for garden tools and garages are for vehicles.
    Simple.

When we had a garage built for our last house, the internal dimensions were
12'x24'. It contained a full-width workbench, shelves, cupboards, bicycles,
tons of tqt, a Rangie and a Silverwing. Comfortably.

I didn't think they existed (though I never looked; I assumed). If I
could have found one of those at the time I bought my house, I'd have
bought one instead of the house I bought. Top of my list was "double
    garage".

The trick round here, is to buy a flat with a garage and rent another
in the block off a neighbour. If I get a bigger car than the Civic,
then that's what I'll be doing.

I miss my old garage, double width and one and a half cars long. I could
fit my Vauxhall Combo van, 7 bikes, my toolchest and two huge
workbenches in there and still walk round everything.

I plan to extend the length of my double garage, to make it twice as
big. Then I can get loads of cars and bikes.

Mine was a standard sized double garage on the plans, but I gave the
builders a substantial sized bung to extend it, as they were still
building the house at the time. No-one ever noticed the extra length as
it was tucked away in the corner of a close.

  18. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
    <looks at workshop>

30' x 24', with a 10' tall sliding door approx 8' wide in the end wall.

The cars and bikes were supposed to live in there; the bikes do, but the
cars are out in the cold & wet, due to the entrance being too high at
the moment. I need to make either a ramp on the inside or raise the
inner floor level by 8" or so.

At the moment the entire workshop area is full of old junk, thereby
proving something about crap expanding to fill the area.

  19. Minted? That's the first time I've ever been called that :) Certainly not a
    view my bank manager shares.

Unfortunately garages weren't something the Victorians gave a lot of thought
to. The bikes live in the brick shed at the bottom of my garden and the car
lives on the road. I don't care much for cars, they're a means to an end,
but it pisses me off when individuals feel they have the right to mess with
your stuff. Especially like that - I mean, some words or a picture might
have shown some imagination or spark of intelligence, but a wiggly black
line? Ffs my cat could do that.
