No, no, no, don't thank him. Thank me. I said that. Well, I didn't,
    but I /could/ have. Anyway, Simes is a ****.

Got my renewal through today... "you must bring proof of insurance. This
must be the certificate, a cover note is not acceptable"

So I spend awhile looking for the certificate - no sign.

The insurance company want £10 to issue another one.

It's a print out for crying out loud - hardly requires sending off to the
    "Writing department" or whatever.

which is fair enough - it provides a feedback loop to try and ensure
vehicles are insured (you'd need an MOT certificate too, if your bike
was >3 years old). I just don't go with the "vehicle not taxed
therefore cannot use it" argument. IMO it *must* be insured, it
/really ought to be/ MOTed and /should/ be "taxed when you can get
around to it". The first definitely directly relates to your
responsibility to road users. The second may do. The third does not.
    that's a pisser - who's your insurer?
it's an admin fee - most fees of this type are "because we can"
charges. It's the price you pay for being an untidy twat
    paperwork-wise.

  9. Because I don't really want the hassle of dealing with plod if I get
stopped. I anticipate a certain amount of bimbleage taking place, as there
will obviously be the novelty of a new bike, but I don't want to push my
    luck.
Hmm, but insurers are pedantic so and so's, especially where a claim is
involved. Could a lack of tax constitute the vehicle being "unroadworthy",
and therefore invalidate one's cover. Having worked in the motor insurance
industry (admittedly, bloody years ago), a tactic of this nature would not
surprise me if the claim was a biggie.
Heh, this is true, although the whole operation to look up your file,
reprint the certificate and post it prolly would come to somewhere around
£10, in terms of the insco's operational costs.

  10. Hmm, but in order for the bike to be worthy of being used on the road, it
must be taxed, therefore could no tax be construed as unroadworthy?
They are tricky buggers at the best of times. I'd sooner not find out.
Any day except Wednesday (at the moment)

  12. Is this something you have experience of dealing with, or conjecture
(honestly, I am not trying to be facetious or smart arsed, it is a genuine
    question) [1]

[1] It reads in a sort of smart arsed way, but it's not intended to, IYSWIM
