I had a Talbot Solara, it was a dull yellow colour and had no reverse
    gear.

That had a look about it like the Vauxhall Viva which is a car I wanted
    but never owned.

so, if you open the throttle, it won't accelerate?

On the Jeep, "cruise" sets a speed that it won't go below - pressing
the accelerator overrides it and you go faster (you then hit "resume"
to go back to the prior set cruise speed). If you hit "coast", even if
you try to out accelerate a set speed, it won't do it.

Oddly, this very subject came up at Chimay, yesterday lunchtime.

    Beer was involved. And sunshine.

    Good, it was.

If you open it gently, it will. If you then roll off, it resumes its
previous speed. If you open it with enthusiasm, it accelerates, and
    disengages the cruise mode.
No, it's not got that bit.

POS, that sounds not unlike mine, either. Fifty quid I think I paid for

Hmm, call me a pedant, but the Rootes Alpines are now considered classic,
and rightly so IMHO. The Chrysler / Talbot versions, which I think you are
referring to are / were indeed shite.

Heh, that made me chuckle, you **** :)

Allegros were fucking awful devices. A mate of mine had a very late model
1500, managed to write it off driving over a raised manhole in roadworks,
tore the engine off it's mounts.

Mate of mine had a Wolseley Hornet. Every time I worked on it I twatted the
back of my head on the fucking false radiator grille, hanging there like
    Bugs Bunny's buck tooth.
Vauxhall Viva HC, what a pile of doodoo that was.

  12. 3 gearboxes in 2 years and in the end IIRC it was given away to get
shot off. Although the MK3 cortina that preceded it wasn't a whole lot
    better.

The worst POS I ever owned was a Mk2 1100 Escort. Pea Green respray (with
runs), 0-60 in about 20 minutes, and around 20 MPG.

    It was a wrong-un

    Bear says...
BL period Jaguars were the worst cars they ever built. Lovely designs
blighted by penny=pinching accountants and shoddy assembly by a
workforce who had lost all faith in a once great company. I've seen
some absolute horrors on the interiors of BL period E-Types and XJs.

Heh, classic, and the later models (1600, 1750 and Tiger V8's)
Heh, that's the shite one. Do you recall how they tried to make it more
desireable by dredging up the "Rapier" tag from the 70's

Ok, but in principle - you wouldn't mind paying high tax in one area,
if it meant that the others were untaxed?

    Dan L Guest

Depends on what you mean by "high".

In principle, I guess, a high*er* rate of tax in one area, with none in
others may be acceptable, although I guess UK plc needs to balance it books
same as any large corporation, so it's not really likely to happen.

Anyway, this is far too sensible a topic to discuss with me, I think I puked
most of my active brain cells out on Sunday morning.

It had nice, hydropneumatic suspension. Not as good as on the BX mind
    you.

Now that was a nice car...
