  1. Don't try to kickstart an XS650 while wearing slippers.

    OUCH...

    <hobble>

The bugger runs though, and since the silencer fell off it's making a
nice bangy noise on open pipes. Fair rattled the horses in the next
field for a minute, then they turned their backs and didn't give much of
a shit for the next ten minutes while I ran it up and down the front
    yard.

Next; re-attach the silencer and get the new (replacement braided) front
brake hoses. One broke clean off when the dangly caliper fell to the
floor, and since I didn't know how long they'd been like that and how
much strain had been put on them, I thought it prudent to replace the
    pair.

Sort the oil leaks (doesn't seem too bad), and maybe hit the road
    shortly.

Just discovered a Snotoiler fastened to it - that'll get chainsaw oil in
    it asap.

Bwhahaha ... I had an SP370 that would start easily every time if you
were wearing bike boots, however if you were stupid enough to try and
start it whilst wearing trainers (or slippers) it would kick back
severely usually forcing my knee into the handlebar too <wince>.

If that was your bike stuck in a bog in mid Wales about 25 years ago,
I'd like to humbly apologise for riding over it, but I needed the extra
    traction...

That's entirely possible, especially if it was just of the Wayfarers
route. You may have noticed one or two of the early Kawasaki works KDX
unitraks broken in two at about the same location :)

It was somewhere near the Monk's Trod by the Claerwen, which is where
my dad's DT175 ended up a little later when he overshot a bend. There
weren't any other bikes around, unless they'd sunk!

I bet the people next door love you.. if there are any.
Good thinking. It would put a crimp on your day if the brakes failed.
Self changing oil, very few jap bikes come with this feature.
Usefull they are.. mMMmmm.. strong in the way of the Scotoiler this one
    is. mMmmmmm..
