Main problem is that people tend to skip the expensive maintenance bits
on 944s and 968s now, and you really don't want one that needs the belts
doing because they're so old you don't know if they'd survive the
    journey home...

Other than that, I did see several very tempting 944 S2s, but the call
    of the 911 was stronger.

    There is that...
I was surprised, too. For a dealer, the prices are very reasonable - the
"500 quid to get in through the door" certainly seems to apply to UK
dealers, plus they usually don't know the older cars that well.

Their service guy did do all the necessary work and pointed out exactly
what the specialist over here needs to check (rear wheel bearing, not
front as originally suspected) but as he didn't have the parts in stock
and thought it was OK to drive, he just sorted out the steering wheel
and checked the car over to ensure that it was safe to drive that sort
of distance. And all that with the car dropped off Wednesday evening and
ready for collection 10:30 the following morning. Plus they helped sort
out a rental car and dropped us off at the rental car place and picked
    us up.

Top marks to Porsche Service Montelimar and if I am in need of someone
to check out the 911 for anything again when I go down that way again, I
at least know I can trust these guys to do a good job.

I did the belts on mine myself - it's a simple enough job. Front
A-arms, water pump & propshaft are the bits I'd check most closely.
The propshaft in particular is bastard expensive, & not really a DIY
    job unless you've got a 4-poster.

I think it's probably the same type bearing they've used since 1963 and
the wheels on these got considerably wider between 1963 and 1989. But
fortunately these bearings are quite cheap, so it's not that big a deal
if you keep on top of it.

Either that or it got T-Mobiled and will arrive anytime soon now that
I'm back home. I've had this before where the majority of SMSs didn't
turn up while I was abroad.
