Timo does it again

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Sep 17, 2008.

  1. I have just had a text message from Timo.

His newly acquired Porsche 911, in which he is holidaying on the
Continent with his missus, is currently immobile in a Porsche service
    centre in Montelimar.

    Further bulletins as and when.

Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. He really ought to do something
more sensible with his money, like investing it in sub-prime mortgage
    brokers.

The previous owner probably didn't tighten it properly after removing
it to get the speedo out for clocking...

Hmmm.... he did say it had only done 65k miles, but only had a
    "partial" servce history.

I don't really know 911s, but doing a bearing in 65k miles? That
    doesn't sound quite right.

Indeed. My 951 was the same year, considerably more powerful, & got
thrashed regularly including several trackdays, but still had the
original bearings when I sold it on at 100k miles.
I know asking price != sale price, but it doesn't look too bad a deal
compared to what's on Autotrader. Still bloody expensive compared to
the much prettier & better handling 944 convertible though. E.g. £5k
    for a '91 with 110k miles & FSH - that's a **** of a lot of car for the
    money.

I've just asked if it was £13k he paid. Answer: "A little less than
    that".

What would a Porker dealer charge for a wheel bearing and "loose
steering wheel" job? A minor limb?

911's need lots of TLC. And at 65k on that revision could need a "bit of
    work".

If you want one you need to be prepared to drop it into a good
specialist once or twice a year and say "fine tooth comb please" and
    don't wince at the cost.

If you cannot or will not do so, *do not enter 911 ownership territory*.
If you can and will, go for it. IMHO the sensual rewards are worth
    every penny.

TBF the 996 revision is better and the 997 revision seems to be almost
Hog proof but you *still* have to do what I suggest or you will get
    bitten.

Minor limb for front wheel, probably a couple of major limbs for a rear.
