Time we do something about parking in London

    Hi everybody,

I think it's time something is done about the parking situation in
London. Everyday, there are more bikes on the street, and after each
(frequent) tube strike, scooter sales rise further. Now parking in
central London is just a nightmare: M/C bays are full from 7am, and
parking attendants fine you even if you're parked on private land (you
know the glass tiles against buildings), and they uncover your plate
to get their 1000 tickets/day bonus.
Mass action is therefore necessary. Call me a dreamer, but here are a
few ideas. First we should all refuse to pay for bike tickets, and
send the ticket to the council with a covering letter explaining that
more parking spaces should be provided, as well as more tolerance
towards bikes parked without causing problems for pedestrians. If
councils start to get many rejections, I think it will be too
complicated to take everyone to court. And to get more people to join
this action, it would be good to have a website on which you can
download the covering letter, and where you can find more info. Then,
it will be simple for us, readers of ukrmc, to put a note on parked
bikes encouraging people to join the resistance, and giving the
address of the website for more info.
I know that demonstrations and mass actions are not a very brit thing,
but who knows. As I said earlier, you can call me a dreamer. In the
meantime, I will look into the possibility of making new bike parks -
a bit of white paint and a brush - like the guys who painted bicycle
lanes on the side of the roads a couple of years ago.

    Legal question follows:

If you're on private land can you remove your registration plate?

i.e. ride to work, move off the road and remove it. That way they can't give
    you a ticket?

  5. Only if you remove your tax disc as well.

I'm sure we can make a single unit which contains both, which we pop in our
bag as we go into work...

Might also make stealing the beast less tempting, 'caus they'd be silly to
    ride it away.

Stonge secured a place in history by writing:
No-one steals bikes in London by riding them away. White transit, the
    crims tool of choice.

    crims tool of choice.

What about those little shed things you sometimes see in supermarkets for
your trolleys (put full ones in while you have lunch, etc) , you ride your
bike in and shut the mini-door behind.

Make a few hundred of those and you'd be quids in.

They can involved the police which could get a bit nasty, as happene to a

Or bend over and take it?

    Depends on your POV, really.

I think this is legal but not necessarily a good idea in practice as I found
    out a while back...

That's exactly what I said: talk about mass action, and everyone who
bothered to reply to that thread only came out with individual points.
We'll never get anything done, saddening.
So I'll guess I'll go and work on my own bike: it's time I install
Velcro behind the number plate ;-)

What would be the insurance aspect of a situation like this which went all
the way wrong? If it's blown up, does your policy take the hit, or the
Police's? Alternatively, is it simply 'tough shit time', and they all wash
their hands of it? Would blowing it up 'by mistake' have any relevance? It
would probably be quicker and cheaper [and less paperwork] to arrest the
owner and simply bang him up in Belmarsh for a couple of years on suspicion
of terrorism; anything other than accept that a mistake has been made, and
    pay for it.
