My bog-standard US credit cards worked fine in Ireland at cash machines
and everywhere else I tried them, and as luck would have it the only
petrol station I pulled into with about 500cc of fuel left, didn't
have PATP. I wonder why yours wouldn't work fine here? Are your cards
chip-and-pin only? We've got some of that, but mostly they're still
    mag stripe only.

FWIW I've never had any trouble using my UK cards in the pumps over
there (MA, VT, NH, RI)... in fact, it was even easier than using them
here. No PIN, no signature required - swipe the card first, pump
away, swipe again if you want a receipt, drive away.

No, the ones I tried (one credit, one debit card) are Chip & Pin but
    have mags strips as well.

Put them in, put in the PIN and the card got rejected. So I went inside
and was told that this was quite common with foreign credit cards. They
work fine for purchases and everything else, though.

Interesting. Oh well, I've got another chance to try it out next week
as I'm off to the Bay Area again.

The fact that they were speaking French with an atrocious accent kinda
    gave it away...

PIN ones don't work, and non-PIN ones ask for a zip code, IME.

No one wants your PIN "number" here... especially if it's a debit card.
Gas pumps or supermarket tills take everything as a credit card, no
PIN required, and if asked, I never select "debit", always "credit".

Ah, so my understanding of the deeply meaningful silence that spoke
volumes of apposite and witty repartee with minimalist precision that
I thought it achieved was absolute bollocks, then?

Er, I'm not helping, am I?

Why is it that the only photo I have of anyone here is Sweller on a
train, and only because I was unfortunate enough to open the work
    section of the grauniad?

    It's because you're a tofu-munching leftie, Grauniad-reading weirdo who
    knits his own pasta.

We red-blooded, chest-beating Torygraph subscribers have access to an
extensive collection of soft-porn photos of various UKRM denizens[1]
*and* a superior cryptic crossword. All this and the Matt[2][3] cartoon.

Don't worry, you'll grow into it one day.

[1] One or two of which don't trigger a gag reflex.
    [2] Not you, Matt.
    [3] Yesterday's had a bobble-hatted and be-scarfed bloke at the Chelsea
FC ground. looking at a sign saying 'Match Cancelled'. A steward was
saying "Sorry, Mrs Abramovich gets the players at the weekend".

You can just enter 0000 for zip, even Chip cards work in the pumps for
    this.
