Thunderace clutch bite point - can I adjust it?

    Hi All!

I've just become the proud owner of a '97 Thunderace and want to know
whether I can adjust the bite point on the clutch lever. At the moment
it bites when the lever is more or less fully released which I dont
    like.

I'm hoping that this isnt indicative of a problem.

    Thanks in advance

    GR

    Thanks for the replies.

The knob is to adjust the reach of the lever, but I was hoping there
would be some adjustment on the bite point.

I just sold my '96. The lever has a knob which adjusts the bite. Push
the lever away from the bar to release a pin from inside the knob,
turn it and try out the four positions until you find one you like.

Also, if it's got old fluid in it, [1] change it. And to finish off
the job set the clutch adjuster.

Want a manual? An electronic one is available from
    www.thunderin.co.uk.
The above should sort it out. Enjoy a gooood bike.

The 'Ace has a hydraulic clutch, right? It is unusual for any
adjustment to be provided for hydraulic clutch actuation mechanisms,
unlike cable where there is always provision for taking up the slack
as the cable wears and stretches. The span adjustment is the only
one, and you're lucky to have that.

What you could do is check the fluid level and that there's no leaks
anywhere. Bleed the thing, or better, change the fluid - that might
help. Failing that, it may be a warning that a new clutch will be
    needed soon.

There's always the bodger's way round - make up a pushrod that puts
the bite point where you want it.

That's a span adjuster Mike, not a clutch bite point adjuster.
    That's a good start.

Relative to the 'bar, perhaps - but not relative to the effective
travel of the lever, certainly not in the same way as a cable clutch
    adjuster will.

It will still bite at the end of the travel, close to the lever
release point regardless of the position of the span adjuster. This
is what the OP didn't like and wants to change, so it won't do him any
    good.

Tell you what, let's wait till he comes back and changes it and see if
    he likes the difference.

Sheesh, The clutch span adjuster also changes the bite position.

Whilst I take your point, which is why I suggested we wait and see
Indeed so Pip, I have already changed the lever adjustment and (as
expected) this made no difference other than how far I have to reach to
    grab the lever.

She's in for a service next weekend, so I'll get the mechanics to have
a look and do the necessary.

I can assert that even a very little rock found by the road can do that
    job on an 'ace.

    Next, I changed clutch fluid.

Here's another: manuals, data and microfiches:

You can never have too many of these tagged, as they seem to come and
go like will o' the whisps.
