Those Bicycle Speedos and Drilling Stainless Steel

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Donegal Paul, Jan 23, 2004.

  1. Clean and lube the speedo cable. It's running dry and winding up then
    releasing; it will break shortly.

If it's not that, it's just a shit speedo.

As far as drilling stainless goes, you can grind your drill bits to a
more appropriate angle, but that's a pain in the arse. Buy a couple of
Titanium coated bits and drill slowly with the proper lube for
    stainless.. umm... kerosene, I think.

Bonwick can probably tell you more accurately.

Wait a minute; how thick is this stainless? If it's only stainless
sheet, ordinary jobbers drills will do. Just make sure they're sharp and
    cut slow with lube.

Dont worry im pretty sure i know why its doing it, its the internal mech in
    the front wheel.
Ah, sir now knows that "They all do that, sir" does actually apply in this
    case.

Basically, the mech is all metal, the speedo has a ring on the inside hub,
which the original one wore out (it *was* 40+ years old)
so i got a new one, however, as they arent made anymore it had to be a nylon
one, which has already worn out :-(
However, there is a dealer that is now remaking them, so ill be getting out
my new debit card in the morning :)
Its only 3mm thick, 4mm at most. I think I need more lube [1]

Feel free to speed as much as you like on sheet ice.

Mebbe wheelies would affect it ...

  6. a KH500 !!! ohh legendary...a flexi flier, fulliautomatix once had a
    KH250...much fun!!

i have an old makita drill i use for metal, it turns very slow compared to
the modern stuff...marvellous, look out for old low geared drills at
    clearance sales and the like
has no hammer function tho...so i have 'slow drill' and 'fast drill' for
    appropriate jobs
and 'battery drill' will also drill SS sheet

The Class 59 railway locos had a radar based speed pickup (they utilised
a wheel creep system for greater tractive effort which would make a
    standard speedo drive useless).

Occasionally, when stood stationery over a pool of water the speedo would
flick randomly. The ripples on the puddle confused it. Apparently.

Remember to use special electrical grease, otherwise it'll just **** up
    the works.

I basically have 8 holes to drill, but as its like box section that doubles
    it to 16.
I have managed to do two 2-3mm holes so far, thats it :-(

Ive not managed to go get any of those cobalt bits yet
