Well I can't win then can I? If I stuck to the general and did not
bring in specific examples, I would no doubt be accused of
generalising. So I give examples. Anyway, I'm bored with it all now.
Verdigris and I have come to an agreement of sorts, er, mainly to
differ in our view of what a hobby is, but an accord of a sort. I do
think men take hobbies of all sorts more seriously than women do.
Anyway, my view is obviously not valid because he says I'm a mannish
    freak. :)

Although I'd be interested to know what proportion of women play team
sports: most of the ones I know play things like squash and badminton.
Team sports require a lot more commitment: you can't simply arrange a game
with a friend. They're also more likely to involve a league of some sort.
Things like squash will probably have a ladder, which is much more
    flexible.

They'd have time to give rugby union the attention it deserves!
I think some of my relatives probably had servants in the early part of
the 20th century: my paternal grandfather's family lived overseas for
quite some time so I'm sure they had a housemaid and a cook at least.
Apart from them, the rest are far more likely to have *been* servants.
I'm sure that's far more representative of the past than "Upstairs
    Downstairs".

Agreed. I bethought me of all the women I have known who do sport -
most go to the gym, swim, run, cycle or play badminton, squash or
golf. I once knew a female footballer and once a (championship
standard) beach volleyball player - that's it.
