Why would a German machine have Cyrillic script on it?

    Bear says...
And me. Statto now has a bike that goes round corners better than it
did, thanks to a new set of steering head bearings and new fork oil.
I've just got back home after a nice tip to the local pub bike meet on
    the Gixer.

  6. Does seem to have been a lots for such a nice day, I was out but
playing on boats rather than bikes. Then up at 5.30 to wash the gear
before going to work - deep joy.

They just wear out. They all do.

There's several firms in the UK that re-furb car turbos, and they have
been known to do turbos from bikes. The main problem is that they are
so small, can can be difficult to obtain/make parts for. I recall
that the IHI turbo used on the 750 was the smallest in the world at
the time, with a max speed of 250,000 rpm.

    heh. Impressively broken.

The vanes on the inlet impeller are pretty badly marked, imo. I'm
sure they weren't that bad when I had it. If I didn't know better I'd
say it'd been run extensively without an air filter, but I'm sure Will
didn't do that. What does the impeller on the other (leaky) turbo
    unit look like?

When I find it (it's in a 'safe' place) I'll let you know. I'm pretty
    sure they're ok.

Is it easy to get them repaired? I may have to speak to Mr. Bonwick.

  12. If you're keeping the turbo, you will probably want to keep the standard
head.[1] I assume that was undamaged.

The other thing I'd recommend is finding a tougher head gasket, which
with the Wiseco bore might be tricky. Big-bore kit + turbo = farewell,
    gasket.

Otherwise - it sounds like an absolute hoot :))

[1] Straight Z650, IIRC. Champ will be along in a minute to confirm or
    correct.

Both heads are standard and, AFAICT, undamaged. The 'current' one has a
known history and has all it's exhaust studs intact.

It's a turbo specific conversion and according to the Wiseco website,
which still lists the kit as available, a modified OEM gasket is used.
Modified in what way, they don't say.

ATM, I'm more concerned as to what caused the lubrication failure at
number 2 big end bearing. I'm hoping all will be revealed when the cases
    are split.

Basically, yes, but a couple of slight difference. The z650 and z750
had the tacho driven off a worm gear from the exhaust cam, whereas the
later GPz750 and the turbo variant had an electronic tacho driven from
the ignition system. Also, the turbo has a cylinder head temperature
sensor screwed into the back of it (between cylinders 1 and 2).

Oh, and turbo heads were black (like the rest of the engine), while
all the z650s were in plain alloy, iirc.

So, a head *could* be used from any of them, but you might have to
**** about with the tacho drive and the temp sensor.

Yep. Just a single bullet connector. You prolly pulled it out when
you removed the bank of injectors, without really considering it.
