Thinking of giving it up

Hmm - I feel the opposite. In three years of riding almost daily in Central
London, I never had any close calls on the marked up Pan. Yet on my own
bike, I've had a few (and not through lack of observation, inappropraite
    speed, wrong positioning etc etc).

One of the guys at work pegged it earlier in the week, rode his fazer
thousand into a tree. His kid found out that his mum was getting quarter
of a million from the insurance company, wants a new computer.

Really? He'd have to swallow hard to get his beard anywhere near me.
ISTR you had a go at growing a beard a few years ago, but wimped out due
to a combination of derision and itchy neck.

There's a programme about Australia on the TV atm. Apparently they have
    a river called "Murray Darling".

But I got knocked off one a couple of years back - fully marked and
with all the lights and tunes on.
Had another bike fatal last night but I`m afraid the idiot did an own
goal (pissed, disqualified, bald tyres to the cords, having just
smashed his girlfriends flat up and severed an artery in his hand rode
off in a rage and wrapped in a mile later). Then got sent over to
Staines for a fatal involving a horse and a car (horse rider survived
but one of the two passengers who were thrown from the car died)
    Wait a while before making a decision mate - I had 5 in 4 days [1] a
couple of years back and it affected me but got over it. If ever you
need to chat then e-mail me and we can meet up.

But could that be due to you riding the two-wheeled version of a battleship?

Nah... It's all due to my highly superior observational skills and

I never understood that. What make of vessel sits rock solid in the sea with
a light going round and round that could be confused with another ship?

Appreciate that JP - I've seen many bike fatals, and the "own goal" style
ones don't bother me. These last two really had no chance - just bikers out
for a ride who got taken out.

I'm going to give it a couple of months. I need to finish building the
Landrover first anyway so I'll have some other transport, and then I'll
    think again.

  12. And yet people have far faster get-offs, and survive.

Yes, OK, we know we're more vulnerable. And I wouldn't want this part of
your job. But if we all felt that way, we'd never ge tout of bed in the
    morning.

Sarf East London - although I'm not doing it for a month or so due to
    shifts.

Have you seen the BSAC Sport Diving manual? The first 80% of the book
explains the many and varied ways in which you're highly likely to die. For
the last 20%, they assume that haven't made it that far without giving up,
they ought to tell you how to do it.

    <snip>

Aw, I didn't really want to read that.

Once upon a time, I'd not really have given a stuff. I always expected that
it'd be driving or riding that was the end of me, but no matter, there would
be a reasonable insurance payout and the wife would at least be OK
    financially.

However, now I have a daughter, coming up to two years old. The thought of
not being there for her tears me apart. It's rather sweet when she wanders
around the house calling "Daddy?" if she doesn't know where I am. How sweet
would it be if I wasn't coming back? The fact that some blind fuckwit in a
cage could quite easily prevent me from seeing her again really does make me
wonder if it's worth it. But I still get on the bike and love every minute
of it including, to a certain extent, the vulnerability. I suppose I'm
irresponsible. I can't see me giving it up for a while, I get too much out
of it. I'll just have to try harder to not get killed doing it.

A few years ago I was on a works night out. I was waiting in a pub with
a new-comer, Patrick, and a couple of others. Steve walks in with his
wife, who Patrick has never met. The first thing Patrick says is:
"Oh, so you ride a horse, then?"

I nearly fell off my seat and choked on my beer.

Fortunately she had a good sense of humour.
And yes, seh did ride a horse.
