Almost every helmet I've owned has been bought using the method of
buying the same brand and size of the one it's replacing and I've never
    had a problem.
This is the case I think for some helmets. They make one or two outer
shell sizes, and vary the protective foam and comfort foam inserts to
suit many sizes, so they might typically have one outer shell which is
XS S and M and another outer shell size for L XL and XXL.

I have two DOT approved helmets of the same make and model which we
bought in the USA last year and both have identical outer shells I can't
see which is which just by looking but one is a L and the other S.

Wish I still had my basin with leather sides that came down over your
ears (you can still get legal basin types but they do not have leather
    sides)
