I've come across a few too in my time. The re-opening process usually
only took a few minutes, especially if I was in the Jeep with the winch
    on the front.

FFS. It wasn't 'sold off by Thatchers lot' it was sold a few months ago
by the Foresty Commission, & it's still open to the public, it's just
the carpark that's closed - due to people driving into the little
tracks & chewing the ground up, & because the vast majority of people
who parked there weren't even using the woods, but the lake opposite.
What, like the gold reserves, Chagos Islands, & the lives of several
    hundred squaddies?

They might include clauses to that effect, which will turn out to be
    worthless.

Not might, will. The full details are out there somewhere.
Or not. Doesn't matter either way as Labour can buy them all back in a
    little over 4 years time.

Reason the cyclists, walkers and horsey-folks are protesting isn't to
    do with ROWs.

There are a lot of Forestry Commission forests around the country that
have been set up for outdoor activities. Mountain bike, horse and
walking trails built in them at considerable expense.

The worry is, if these are sold off, then this access will be removed,
because none of it is public ROW.

In which case it's a stupid idea to sell them in the first place.

It was a somewhat tongue in cheek comment as I'm sure you know. I don't
know whether it's a stupid idea or not (& it won't affect me either
way), but I find myself automatically taking the opposing view to all
these campaigns that keep springing up, purely because they rely on
misinformation at best & downright lies at worst[1] to drum up support.

Unfortunately there seems to be lots of people who'll jump on any
bandwagon if it means bashing the Tories without bothering to find out
if they're being told the truth.

There is of course a part of me that would be delighted if the forests
were sold & made completely off limits to walkers just to give them a
taste of their own medicine. But I know you're completely on the
opposite side of the fence from me on that one.

[1] Like the tree lot including 'for sale' signs on their map to mark
forests that are either already privately owned or as good as. They did
remove Savernake when I pointed this out, but don't seem to have
checked the rest as Westonbirt Arboretum's still on there.

Telegraph poles laid across the track make passing difficult on a bike
    as heavy as the Tenere.

You had to think beyond putting "Cinderford" and "big hole" in a sentnence?

  12. Point of order Mr Chairman but aren't the present incumbent crowd of
privately educated privileged bankers sons not Thatchers Children?
Or have I missed something again.

  13. I would dispute the use of the term "nothing". On my one brief visit to
Keilder Forest I did note that foxglove grew fairly well on the margins of
the woodland. **** all else mind but it was not certainly not nothing.

    Point of order.
Squaddies sign up for active service and possibly getting killed is part of
the deal. We don't have Conscription. Other than a general duty of care they
are expendable for the greater good.

We should also employ a touring baseball bat team to batter the families of
dead squaddies who go on to complain and squeal when said squaddie gets
killed in the line of duty.

I think it's best that you hope your son never signs up.
    See above.

If he does that's his business. If he gets killed in active service I'll be
sad but I won't be blaming anyone else.

    The greater good of who?

I agree totally if they were fighting a just and legal war that
protects the people of Britain, but sending them to do the USA's
bidding is not what 99% of them ever signed up for.

Over the past year or so I've tolerated a few of your comments thinking
you're just out to get a rise from some people just for kicks, but you
overstepped the mark with this one.

So you think professional soldiers who take the shilling should pick and
choose what wars they go fight in?
On that basis we should adopt my strategy and scrap most of the armed forces
altogether and leave it up to the Subs and Nukes.

I can't think of a better use for them, if we must pay for them, than
protecting our oil supplies in the middle east and trying to help out those
poor fuckers under the heel in Afghanistan.
