How the **** can it do that? At the very *least* you can here it coming.
It's not like it going to hide behind parked cars and wait for someone to
    poke their head out.
Entirely possible. Probably not my personal feeling.
    Has no relationship to this.
Ergo they should be encouraged not to and those not responsible should not
    be blamed when they do.

That hardly nullifies his point IMO

I think he quoted it because it can in some people's perceptions: Personal
music devices, general traffic noise, roadworks, lack of concentration,
hangover, etc can all contribute to disguising the approach of a bike
    especially in low gear.

That boils down to observation on the part of the ped [1]. IMO there has
to be a balance of responsibility.

[1] Don't step into the road until you are certain it's clear. Bit like
driving / riding such that you can stop safely in the distance you can see
    to be clear

In an ideal world, yes. But pedestrians don't have to take a test and
    there's no age minimum.

  13. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Keelworm
    That's what screenwashers are for.

Well, if they pass that idea into law, then the fuckers should be made
to buy insurance, too, so we can claim for damages.

I was pulling away from a set of lights and got about 50 yards
up the road and a kid ran across the road in front of me, from
behind a white van (on the opposite side, still stuck in the
tail back), got as close to killing her as I would want. Don't
know of any observation skills that would have helped. That's
    been my one close call.

Same sort of rule in Holland PLUS it includes cyclists and them fuckers
believe they own the roads, cyclepaths and pavements.
Yes, I do own a cycle.

I've better things to do in France next time I go. Friends to meet, roads to
    ride.

  19. bollocks and I'm speaking from experience.

many moons ago when I was riding as restricted 50 doing a whopping
maximum 35 miles an hour I hit a kid (of about 15) who ran out in
    front of me.

I saw him and tried to go behind him at which point he spotted me and
stopped for a second and moved back towards the pavement directly back
    into my path.

I then altered course to go the other side of him and sods law says
he'd seen me change direction and turned back yet again into my path.

    *wallop*

we both go down and get up, seemingly ok. He's more concerned about
getting to work but he's persuaded by a witness that he should wait to
    be seen by an ambulance.

Needless to say they cart him off to hospital. Statements are taken
from everyone and the police conclude there was nothing I could have
    done to avoid him.

I notify my insurance and sometime later they come along and take a
statement. Aparently his statement says 'I was crossing the road and
the next thing I know i'm in hospital'.

Something I didnt know until this point was that he had until he's 18
to make a claim from me. Needless to say there was no-one I could
claim off for damage to my bike.

Knowing the shiteness of the brake on the MB50 there is no way I could
have stopped in time and I did my best to avoid him.

and what you're saying is there is something I could have done to
avoid him? I'd appreciate you telling me what (apart from aim directly
where he is which is what I'd do now).
