You'll get pikey families standing at the side of the road chucking their
kids under cars that look like the driver is well off.

    <I haven't really thought this through yet>
I'm afraid I agree - in principle at least.

To hit a pedestrian takes a spectacular lack of observation and foresight.
People think that because they are in a 30mph limit they can do 30mph
regardless of the prevailing hazards / dangers / risks.
If you don't drive/ride at a speed that would allow you to stop within the
distance you can see to be clear then you are at the very least 50%
    responsible for a resulting accident.

The bottom line is that pedestrians & cyclists cannot safely mix with
    motorised vehicles.

Bollocks does it. All that's needed is a pedestrian jumping out
    without looking.
Utter garbage, I'm afraid. If you applied that logic everyone would
slow down to <5mph whenever there was a pedestrian on the pavement.
    It shows.

That bit's true. But while being in control of a vehicle that can do so much
damage entails a lot of that responsibility the pedestrian can't be absolved
of some degree as well. Drunken dickheads lurching all over the shop
wielding mobile phones while unaware of anything else shouldn't be exempt
from the same responsiblity. And chicks in mini skirts are asking for it.

What? "*All* that's needed..." ?!There has to be a vehicle too....
....with a driver who isn't looking and/or anticipating an all too obvious
    risk.
It's not garbage. And I agree that you'd have to drive at a snail's pace to
    ensure pedestrian safety.

True, they can easily lose their balance on uneven surfaces when drunk and
    stagger into your path.

The last time this happened to me was when Des and I were riding out of
Leeds and Bev Porter and her fella staggered into the road. I braked and
halted. Des braked and slung his FJR down the road...

Happened to me in a cab when the driver inadvertantly played chicken with a
drunk pedestrian who looked like he was going to make it across the road and
then went back on himself and hit the cab. The cabbie should have stopped
way before but he panicked. The pedestrian should have learned to handle his
    drink. Smashing it was.

As Ace says, some **** (especially a fucking kid) can just step out
from behind a car, or whatever, without any warning.

Personally, if I ran over a pedestrian and it clearly wasn't my fault
    I wouldn't give a flying **** - and I certainly wouldn't expect to be
    billed for the privilege.

I would expect cobblers to be amongst the less dangerous pedestrians, their
well-tended footwear enhancing their grip upon the pavement helping to
prevent slips and slides onto the road surface.

What about "A bike can appear from nowhere, without any warning"....
......"Personally if I knocked a biker off and clearly it wasn't my fault
    I wouldn't give a flying ****..." etc

My point is that you *are* at least partially at fault if you hit a
    pedestrian.
If you don't agree then you must believe a pedestrian has no place on the
road - but AIUI the only road a pedestrian isn't legally allowed on is the
    motorway.

I *know* it is totally impractical to drive at pedestrian-safe speeds - but
that agrees with my other point...
...that pedestrians and motorised vehicles do not mix.

Do you think that the fact that you stomped the back brake as hard as you
could will stand up in court?
