Things that make you go "Hmm"...

  1. The ol' Mundano had a rattly exhaust in the last day or two and I
thought a baffle had come loose or something but it was only when it
started whistling I decided to take it to Kwik-Fit and get it tightened
up before it fell off. Up on the ramp it went, bloke bangs along the
length of the pipe, "the cat's gone", he declared and I had to concur
    that yes, indeed it had.

    Arse.

That'll be two quid shy of three hundred quid then[1]. The good news is
it runs lovely now and that dreaded left hand pull has gone.

[1] The cat was £190 and I got him to bung on a couple of tyres as well
even though there was a good thousandth of an inch left on them.

You got a left-hand pull from a dodgy cat?

Was it dragging its claws on the side of the front tyre?[1]

[1] And did it make a "meeeeeowwwwww" noise as it went past?

Nah, it needed doing and I don't have the tools, time or inclination to
    do it myself.

It handled like an old moggie.
No but the "clumpity-clump" noise has gone now.

Not bike related, but certainly a bookmark everyone should have,
especially if they're running an older car.

I *always* check there before giving the go-ahead for any exhaust parts
    these days.

The odd (or not) thing is the cat that was on it had two pipes leading
in and this one that's on it now only has one. I don't know what that
could mean but it's got a two year garra so I suppose it's the ceramic
    one.

SteveH? He'z just ziz guy, you know?
    **** me! Volvo S80 cat : £332.81 + vat

I suppose if one were to take the old cat and cut it open, remove cat
bits, and weld it shut again (or make pattern empty fake one) they
couldn't tell, so long as the engine still passed the emission tests...

That's pretty much what I said to the bloke in Kwik-Fit.

I was met with a slow shake of the head.

    Bear scribbled:
ISTR that BMW boasted they had an engine that emitted less than 10% of
the MOT requirements and definitely didn't need a cat. Our most
intelligent government said "we don't care, it must have a cat"

So I'm totally guessing but since the last MOT read something like 0.1%
ppm of something, and the limit was 10%, even without a cat it should
    be under the 10%?

Bear came up with the following;:
One of the proven ways to increase a Landrover TDi engines power is to
replace the cat-fitted system with a non-cat system.

    <Generalisation mode>

Increases power by about 8%, mpg by about 5% and emmissions by about 3%.

    </gm>

There are other bits to take out too, like the EGR (Exhaust Gas
Re-circulation) unit, but essentially it improves the motors no end. Mind,
    a feckin' great intercooler does even more ... <drool> ... ;)
