    Well, there's a great deal to be said for mastering the machine, being
    in control, taking corners at appropriate speeds, applying appropriate
    braking, not headbutting armco...

    Oh, what's the point? You wouldn't understand.

    Where appropriate = as fast as you dare/the machine can cope with.
    Honestly, even when I was first riding my 125[1] it was still all
    about going as quickly as possible. 'Fast' is not an absolute, you
    know.

    <snips bait>

    [1] Everyone else had a 250 - I thought the 125 was quick enough.

    Jesus no. If I'd been about 75cm higher in the air and my body had
    cleared the armco, my head would most likely not have remained
    attached. Not in any meaningful way, certainly.

    I read things like this and think that maybe I'm not such a bad rider
    after all. I'm not fast (I touch the ton occasionally on the Pan),
    can't handle high winds and I'll never enter the knee-down Pantheon,
    but I don't do 70 on motorways and I don't stay behind slow vehicles.

    I had some fun this morning on the ST, taking the long way around. 70per
    dual carriageway. Traffic doing between 30 and 80 depending on the cunting
    trucks overtaking each other. White line between 60 and 110 with the
    occasional exasperated trip up the hard shoulder.
    It's good to get to site with an ear to ear grin.

    Against it's design brief the ST4S may well be the best bike I've ever
    owned, or at least equal to the GSXR1000K1/2.

    I had to go up to Gatwick last week, A303, M3, M25 and there wasn't a
    boring spot on it: the A303 is nice enough in its way and filtering on
    the M25 is a treat at 5:00 in the evening, tucking in behind a local
    rider.

    SD banged the rocks together and they said :
    From WUN earlier on today when asked "WTF happened then?";

    He doesn't remember much at all. Coming up exit slip road off A1M, line
    of traffic in inside lane, him passing it in outside lane, car
    "appeared" in front of him, no room to do anything really. Next memory
    is in hospital.

    It would seem the car decided to pull out of the queue and did so
    without looking, but he says he'll trust the statements of the
    witnesses.
