Thermostats 'n cooling stuff...

Been trying to diagnose a cooling problem with the Pig. Had a new thermostat
fitted and now it overheats within 10-20kms.

After a week of battling with bleeding the cooling system, I've pulled out
the new thermostat and dropped it in a saucepan of boiling water. Nothing
happened. It also seems that it's not sealing where it's meant to.

Seems to me that there's constant but restricted flow.

About how much movement should I expect in the thermostat and about what
    temperature should it start opening?...

If thermostat is working (yeh, saw your other post) then maybe it's the head
gasket? My dad once had a car that had a blown head gasket and was pumping
nice hot gas into the cooling water. Result was it over-heated within 20km
of the point of origin. The fact it happened in the middle of summer on
one of our Gold Coast expeditions[1] made it extra fun :p

[1] Most people go on 'holidays' - but my parents tried to make them
'educational' and an 'experience to cherrish and remember' hence we never
actually had "holidays" as kids....it was usually school in a different
location. Except our week with the grandparents - my grandfather "taught"
me how to drink scotch straight-up when I was 11!

Gawd, if I had two bob for every time someone suggested that...No bubbles in
the coolant, runs sweetly, no white exhaust smoke. Ran fine before valve job
    from previously trusted mech.

I don't work on it often because I've got the shits with it and the garage
is too hot during the day, and infested with mozzies during the night. Add
to that the time it takes to cool down after a run and the fact that I
prefer to aneasthetise myself with my drug of choice before operating and
progress is steady if a little slow...

As it turns out, I've since found two probs. The thermostat, although
working, wasn't fitted correctly. Hence the constant but restricted flow.
The heat gun the mech used to open the thermostat while filling the system
with coolant, melted and warped the plastic filler neck just enough to break
the seal with the radiator cap.

Dunno if it's fixed yet though. Just got off work and the mozzies are moving
    in...
