The Z650 has to go, but how much is it worth?

Discussion in 'Classic Motorbikes' started by Crimson Dynamo, Nov 8, 2006.

  1. The time has come to free up some garage space to make more space for
the new BMW K1200LT and provide some elbow room for this winters
planned Honda CB400F rebuild. My 1980 Kawasaki Z650B3 has to go the
journey I'm afraid, but I have no idea what it is worth. I have tried
Autotrader and various other bike sale websites, but such 'old' bikes
seem to be in short supply. Does anyone have any idea what sort of
price I should be looking for for it?

The bike has about 46K miles, is in that classic Z650 metallic dark
green, has a Harris 4-1 exhaust and runs well. The battery needs a
good charge as it hasn't been out for a while and I have Haynes and
Klymer manuals, a spare set of coils and some other minor spares. It
had a brand new Kawasaki Z650 master cylinder earlier this year as the
old one was leaking and the mirror mount hole was all chewed up. There
is some minor bubbling of the paintwork around the rhs tank logo
    because of the leaked fluid.

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

    Cheers

    Oh yes.
A pic would help. Good news is that it's in the right colour and runs
well. Top Z650 money goes to the original B1-B3 series, but top money
means OE 4-2 exhaust (rather hard to find now), perfect chrome on both
guards (ditto), and a really good OE seat (slightly easier). Get all
that together, and you're looking at £1500-2200.

Z650s don't really make much money, considering. Condition for
condition, they're about half the price of a Honda CB750, which is daft
as they're far better bikes, and better-looking to boot. The CB750 just
has history on its side - and it's been touched by the Classic Fairy. I
can't help thinking Z650s are going to rise - in fact, I was taking to
Dave Marsden of Z-Power yesterday, and he said much the same.

It's hard to sell a Z650 like the one you've described for much above
    £900.

  4. Well, thanks for the info and the rapid reply. I'll put it in the
Autotrader and perhaps on E-Bay too to see what I can get.

I agree with you that the Z650 deserves better press than it gets. It
was always streets ahead of the Hondas in my book, apart from the 400/4
which is a gem in my humble opinion :) The one I am going to be
restoring over the winter is in a sorry state, but all the bits are
there (including two dismantled engines) so I have plenty of fun to
    come.

    Thanks again

Bung it on Ebay with an SP of, say, £700. Post the url here, so we can
    all have a laugh ;-)
    And mine :)

    This is mine[1]:

Must dig it out and give it a run this weekend, if the weather stays
    fine.

    [1] OK, my wife's.

I should have the trailer sorted out by the time he's stopped fannying about
and made an offer for the thing.

Don't come to us with your trifling problems. We are merely here to
    advise.

Can't you rent another one or something?
Ahah. Multiple exclamation marks. We like it when that happens, it's a
    clear sign we're getting through.

Now: Doooo itttt. Doitdoitdoitdoitdoitdoitdoit. They're all bitches
    anyway.

Oops, sorry, wrong script. Hang on...

    Ah, here we are. Doitdoitdoitdoitdoitdoitdoit.

And don't forget about that nice Mr Uncle Nigel.
