  1. If there's enough battery to power the fuel pump and brain; yes. Or get it
up to enough speed for the charging system to work and it 'might'.

I thought bump-start was the yankism for using one car's bumpers to give
    another car a push.

Not on their sides no; you have to stand them up onto their wheels.
(You might have a problem with a dead-flat battery or a bike with the
headlight permanently on but if you've got a bit of charge you should be OK.
I've clutch-started EFI cars with no problems.

I thought about this today too.
"Bump start" is definitely a 4-stroke thing. I've never heard the term used
on a smoker (which is usually "push" or "roll" started)

That'd just be a "bump " considering most Yanks don't have
    clutches!

The injected Hinckley Triumphs need a fair bit of oomph left in the battery
to bump start. The ECU is a fairly complex piece of kit compared to most
bikes but the downside is the amount of juice needed to run it. Basically,
if it's got enough to bump start, it's probably got enough to turn it over
    with the starter anyway.

Every time mine's gone flat, usually overnight, it's gone almost dead flat.

Did it the other day for the first time in a couple of years...

I've never heard anyone from around here use the term 'bump start',
people have always used push start or occasionally roll start.

Our area uses ball-up rather than ball-down for the foot too....

FYI, if you can push, with another vehicle, an automatic car fast
enough, it will start the engine. (This assumes old-style non electronic
    autos.)

On a Ford Corina MkI Auto, that speed was about 35 mph.

Note. In the highlands of Scotland, this can get _very_ interesting,
especially if you are driving the pushing car. ;-)

hehehe....love it. And being an ex pom (very proudly too....the ex that is!)
I have always known it as bump or jump start. Didn't matter which. But those
dim memories have me wishing I had a kick start again.....just in case

This is why I'm so glad we've now got a manual (there had to be
something good to come out of blowing up the Crummydore!). When we
first came down to Goulburn to look for a house, Linda was still
getting morning sickness and didn't travel too well. We had to pull
over about 10km short of Abercrombie Caves so she could throw up, but
then the car wouldn't start...and none of the first dozen drivers we
pulled over had jumper leads (I was still very appreciative that they
had stopped for us, not one of them drove by without at least
    stopping).

In the end we only got going because one of the couples who stopped
went back to Abercrombie Caves and fetched the ranger for us, who was
able to jump-start the car and get us going again. In a manual, I
could have just rolled back down the hill and clutch-started it no
problems at all (it wasn't dead flat, just too flat to start).

Needless to say, the first thing we did on arriving in Goulburn was go
straight to KMart (closest place open on a Sunday) and bought a new
    battery. And jumper leads! :)

Before I replaced the reg/rec (the genuine replacement I bought off
eBay for half retail cost is doing great!), I was regularly killing
batteries on the CBR. You know a battery is VERY flat when even a good
hill is useless for clutch-starting. That was in one of those little
towns somewhere between Penrith and Picton, a very pretty spot to be
stuck if you have a choice!

  18. Your post definitely belongs in this thread :)

Mum wouldn't let me go for my licence till I proved I could jumpstart a
car correctly and change a wheel.

and the thought of driving one about *without* leads never occurred to
    me!

I even used to carry them on The Old Girl as she used a car battery and
had occasional switch trouble meaning the battery could get drained.

Only time I ever used them was to jumpstart a car on the Hume.

Three of my bikes have kick start levers, but I still use any excess
gravity available, rather than kick the buggers.
