I tried to help a feller with a flat-battery the other day. (It was a
headlights-on model that didn't get ridden often)
I was stunned to discover that he had no real idea how to bump-start a bike
but then I was floored when I got it running but he didn't want to ride it
    three suburbs in-case it stalled......

    He preferred to just holler-a-Marshall....

Fark these young 40-year-olds are a bloody dissappointment!

    (I had a think afterwards and I can't recall owning a bike that I HAVEN'T
    had to bump-start!)

(Some were even without gNatalie's assistance!)

You just know what I'm going to say, don't you Clem?

Hmmm, bump-start? Sounds like something I need to know about... I only know
how to bump-stop, which was no fun at all <grin>.

Not sure if my bike has a bumpstart button either. Where would I find it?

Can I get it retrofitted if it's not installed? Sounds like a jolly good
    idea.

Actually in your case it could be better termed a jump start... bump start
is a bit of a misnomer in any case.
Being a bit short in the legs like myself, it would likely be necessary that
you would first have to jump, so that your bum could combine with the (p),
when then the bum(p), hopefully would cause the thing to fart.

    Hehe.

Sales guy sells a Blackbird to a customer and it gets delivered to this
guy's place. Next day he crashes but fails to mention this when he calls up
    and asks,

"When I want to stop don't I just turn the grip the other way?"

I used to always call it a jump-start too (for the reasons that you mention)
but these days everybody uses the yank-ism "jump-start" to refer to the
process of of using jumper-leads from battery to battery.....
..... so I had to use the next best description; "bump start".

    Jump-start is a yank-ism? Unless "jumper leads" is a yank-ism too, it
seems like a perfectly legitimate phrase to me, since that's where it
    derives from.

Besides, "bump start" just sounds far too kinky...

Yeah but as I discovered once with my little clip-on-equipped Kwakka S2
350-triple; what seems easy to roll-start DOWN a hill can be a fukkin' bitch
to have to defeatedly push back home again UP the hill!

Yeah but it takes Yanks to take the sentence "start using jumper-leads" and
    turn it into a quasi-verb; "Jump-start"!
But "push-start" or "roll-start" don't really describe how it's properly
    done.

What if you've got no gNat pushing and you just paddle-it and do it
    yourself?

"Clutch start" has always worked well for me. It still isn't a
complete description of the process either, but it does the job.

    Agreed; "clutch-start" would've been a good descriptor.

yes but not generally as easy as a carb bike

its all dependant on the actual battery condition and how fast you get the
    bike moving

as you need to get enough power to get the electrics going and the fuel pump
    to run
    up to pressure

I thought it was called a bump start because on high compression
engines you have to jump and land on seat and release the clutch at the
same time, landing on the seat was the Bump

or I could be full of shit as per usual
