They'd never believe it's 12C or even 15C. The yanks can't make anything
at all that lasts more than 50 years without falling apart.

The point was (I assumed) that they couldn't grasp the concept that
*anything* could be older than 200 years. But you knew that.

Our friends from NM were gobsmacked that the church in the village
where my parents lived contained a stone panel on which were engraved
the names of all the rectors (vicars, whatever) who had presided there
since it was built, in the late 11th century.

Actually, I find that rather good, myself.

The odd thing is that the US contains some sites and dwellings that
are very, very old indeed, like the old Indian pueblos and
settlements. But they seem to overlook them.

Please Sir, I know this one, Sir. And that was hardly a war, but faked up.
They blamed the Spaniards for 'mining' the USS Maine and, spurred on by the
Hearst press, went to war to avenge Merkin honour. Trouble was, there were
no mines, and the Maine went up because of the accidental ignition of powder
charges below her forward turrets - killing over two hundred sailors. The
truth was merely an inconvenience to the Merkins, of course, and they went
to war anyway [it was a very unequal conflict, of course, and lasted only 10
weeks] snatching most of the remaining Spanish Empire [Cuba, the
Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam] under the Treaty of Paris.

There again, the start of the Vietnam war was similarly bogus. Johnson used
the excuse of the imaginary second 'Gulf of Tonkin incident' - a supposed
attack on a US destroyer by North Vietnamese gunboats - to go to war. The
first 'incident' had been provoked by covert US support of a South
Vietnamese attack, and was therefore an understandable response by the
North, although probably illegal under international law. Two days later
the second 'incident' was completely faked, and provided the necessary
'evidence' of aggression by the North to allow Johnson to force through the
legislation he needed to support the coutries of SE Asia. North Vietnam
being a rather tougher and more resolute enemy than Spain, the human cost
    was 58,000 young Merkin dead.

US military history = largely bollocks.

  10. You forgot 'his willingness to stand up for his principles to his own

He is one of the very few politicians for whom I have very great
    respect.

  16. Please don't misunderstand. I personally like it, it's the inbred cunts in
office and dragging there incompetent self-righteous asses down the road doing
10 under in the passing lane and staying there that are a problem. Seems so
slick sales man convinced them that speed is dangerous and filtering, lane
splitting are also. Might just give up riding and driving and walk everywhere
    from now on.
The only reason I've yet to create a body count to rival Jim Jones is that
I'm so tolerant of the mentally deficient.

History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has any rational
basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the
unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and
spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from
    fiddling with it.
