I've not seen you in the flesh for a couple of years, but if you want
my honest opinion, medical science isn't yet at nearly an advanced
enough stage to be able to make you slim *or* athletic.

    That's nice for you, dear.
    Oh, joy and delight redoubled.
    Deep joy.
This has the hallmarks of an event to be dreaded. I'd pull a sickie,
    IIWY.
I used to be forced to "do" Christmas with the in-laws - we'd go to
them, or more commonly they would come to us ... for a fucking week.
Round Two at S-I-L's Boxing Day or the day after in a little house
    full of scrapping kids.
Then there would be New Year's Eve at the in-laws perched on a lumpy
sofa watching shite on the box with a small sherry - followed by
rendezvous at B-I-L's New Year's Day in a big house full of scrapping
kids, ending with a 3-hour drive starting at 22:00 taking the in-laws
home and finally getting home at 01:00.

I have such fond memories of tiptoeing across a frozen and deserted
M62, driving between the lines of ice which followed the white lines
in a 60mph crosswind. It summed up the whole period, really - bleak.

  8. Odd that. I have memories of us sitting in the car (ma, pa, brother
and me), on a deserted M62/M6, listening to the chimes of Big Ben on
the radio. We were driving back from Liverpool haveing left the New
Year celebrations at a 'friends' somewhat early. Very bizarre.

The carol "In the Bleak Midwinter" always brings that memory back.

  9. Perfect time to go for a ride, surely, with everyone else cooped up
inside or too drunk/hungover to get out on their bike.

I was rather hoping to do the fancy dress thing that takes hold of Wigan
around that time. Although this year I've been preparing myself for the
usual christmas parties, so I should enjoy them a bit more.

Year before last I was in Cornwall, doing all that. It was okay.
Last year I was in South Africa. It was okay.
I get this awful sense of time passing, and missed opportunities.
That's more about me, than NYE, I suppose.

  19. Well I can relate to Champ's comments [1] but Ben - you're more than a
decade younger than Champ. You can't possibly be feeling like this now.
I thought you were a brighter and more adventurous chap than you are
    painting yourself.

[1] being only a year or so behind him in the age stakes.
