Yeah, not an end of term type exam right enough. Ongoing assessments marking
for effort/attendance etc. with an end of year target perhaps. Come to think
of it that applies to a lot of subjects.

Oh, but the deitrirus of society will affect him in rising crime
    figures.

I see nothing wrong with competition in schools. Which is probably good
'cos there's plenty of it in IME (well my Children's experience to be
    exact).
I spent about 18 months on the dole in the early 80s. Some of the time
I had a broken leg (hah!) other of the time there wasn't a job I wanted
to do. Society invested in me then and it gave me the time to get my
head together. Since then I've worked consistently for about 18 years
now and more than repaid any debt through taxation.
I see absolutely no value in a compulsary qualification in sport. Sure
there should be compulsory games/PE but a GCSE? Come on. I can just
see the interview at Cane's factory...

"OK Kerry, what did you get in games?"

    "An E"

"So that means you can't run very fast?"

    "Yes"

    "Good, you're hired"

    Fucking hell. 14k at 16! Jesus I wish I was 16 again...
A job with Dymag machining wheels? Eh? You think that's a job for a
Graduate? I think most Graduates probably want to do something else
than operate a lathe/milling machine/ whatever as a full time job.

I'm just guessing here that you're not a Graduate? Sure you were smart
enough to be one but you wanted to make your way in life.

I'm also guessing you've suffered Graduates on a fast track programme.
Pain in the arse isn't it, all these young know-nothing fuckers telling
you what to do as they scoot up through the organisation.

I'd question why I was getting abuse.

I'd then look to see what happened with others in the past that got
    abuse and then behave appropriately.

Then again I'm not a wanker like you.

Heh, we've just got one as a director of operations (deals directly with
us for day to day IR issues), under 30. The dislike emanating from some
of his juniors (in position) is palpable.

Although TBH, nice bloke he appears to be, he's doesn't have 'it' for
dealing with such a large, politicised and dispirited industry. That's
    just the managers.

Our problem is he seems to hide behind processes and procedures rather
than make a decision. For a start, If we're dealing with it the process
    has failed...

    I do hope I'm wrong.

You don't need a degree to do the machining job.

If you got the machining job you wouldn't end up >10k in debt after
    you've completed your degree.

Well 25 days leave is pretty poor really and a non-contributary
pension??? who gets those these days- possibly the Civil Service but I'm
    not so sure.

I do, but it's a money plan based pension rather than final salary. I
can subsidise it, but, currently don't - I'm using that money to over-
pay on the mortgage instead. Investments are doing badly but debt still
    costs...

But it isn't at all business friendly.

We end up with 50% of our kids with degrees/HNDs and the like.

Who stacks the shelves at the supermarket?

    Who sweeps the streets?

A Degree doesn't prepare you to do a job at *Technician* level. We've
got loads of people with degrees- even Engineering Degrees. We don't
    have enough solid technicians.

I've (recently ish- 3 years ago) tried to recruit technicians; it's a
fucking nightmare to get anyone any good. I could get people with
Degrees but that wasn't what I wanted; I wanted people to be directed by
others with hands on practical skills to moderate others' academic and
    theoretical knowledge

    Agree completely with this bit.

Ah, not final salary... You know, that's a big disincentive to mobility
in the labour market I reckon. I like my 1/50th Final Salary scheme-
the employer takes the risks. Why should I move on when I'll end up in
a money purchase scheme where I take the risk (and I've already been
fucked over by Equitable/lax supervision by the FSA or whoever)

Good being old it is. I am one of the lucky ones who will be getting a

In your position I wouldn't either.

I don't trust any single pension scheme so I have the work one, the
vague inclination there may not be a government one, and one that used
to be my old private pension - I now use that for opting out of S2P.
Each relies on a different group of people not fucking up, so there's a
    slight contincenc there.

I guess I'll find out in another 35 years if it's worked out..

  18. That size of small engineering company used to have a couple of
    apprentices as a norm.

Norm was the old bloke on the lathe. His mate, Ken, had a hernia and
    worked the milling machine.

I have GCSE PE. There's more to it than running, jumping and throwing
[0]. It covers biology that doesn't get done in biology, psychology that
doesn't get done in psychology (where offered), and ... um... some other
stuff that the years have dimmed the memory of.

    [0] There's the golf module...
