Some bike program on telly today had a septic talking about his bikes and
    his wall of death show.

He said "This bike was built in 1941, the very beginning of WWII"

Oh yeah, and centripital force pushed the bike to the outside of the wall
and stops it falling down the hole in the middle.

    Not biting.

Fantastic site- not sure if the lion is especially ginger-hued or not. There's a
lot of great bike shots on that site plus tons of other interesting stuff.

Great minds think alike- a red one of these was my first bike (no it isn't me in
    the picture):

One could also argue that the initial war in Europe wasn't a World War

Combatants: Germany, France, Poland, UK and Empire, Canada, Australia,
    South Africa.

The first naval battle was in South American waters.

Add to that Japan and China at war from 1937 and it looks fair fecking
    global.

Americans are taught this is when WWII started. Everything that happened
before that date was just a civil war...

    I listed the initial combatants.

So what you're saying is that if you ignore most of the world, it was
hardly a world war at all.

I suspect it would've fallen on deaf ears.

ISTR the Soviet Union wasn't exactly sitting on the fence.
    Surface to Surface, anyway.

Americans are also taught that Henry Ford invented the motor car, I've
seen it in a school book.

  12. True enough. It wasn't a proper World War until then.

  13. Given that the entire British Empire and Commonwealth, including the
Dominions, were at war before then, and given that Russia had started
fighting in 1940, and given that fighting was happening right around the
globe, the entry of the United States in 1941 isn't the magic trigger
that makes it a World War.

    YMMV, etc etc etc.

Ok. I'll do what I can to get the history books re-written to show the 2nd
    WW didn't stretch from 1939 to 1945.

I don't have a lot of hope though.

  15. Snot a proper war unless we were fighting the frogs anyway so who gives a
**** about the rest of the world.

  16. Yes, yes, yes, Iswym, but a World War without the main arsenal of
democracy being actively involved is a bit of a damp squib, imo.
A few old scrappy destroyers don't count.
