The GB speedway team are all republicans. Not one of them sang the
national anthem when it was played at the start of the World Cup
    final.

I'm proud of them. I refuse to sing it at any events I go to and the
sooner it's fucked off into history the better.

Hopefully they'll be better than Thursday, Lee Richardson was his usual
self.. miss the gate then don't try. Bomber Harris on the other hand
    was stunning like normal.

Strangely enough I used to share your opinion fully and whilst I still
hold strong republican views I do appreciate the symbology of it being
our National Anthem, for which I would stand but I'd be fucked if I will
    sing the words.

  5. You could argue that having a random toff chosen by accident of birth
as head of state is actually better than singing 'God Save Tony
Blair'..... (Or indeed having sung God Save Lady Thatch.)

If we should have a national anthem then why shouldn't it be about
England or Great Britain? The fucking Jocks manage it with Shower of
Scotland but we're expected to sing about a bloody person.

The tune is a bit of a dirge.

  8. Rule Britannia. Why we don't use it I can't imagine. Much better toon.

Or the theme from The Archers (Billy Connolly's suggestion).

I was thinking just that, despite remembering Flanders & Swann taking
the piss out of it as a British, or rather, English, anthem many years
    ago.

  12. *Some* religious content? *Some*? I think your some-meter might need
    recalibrating.

I'm still quite fond of "Another Country", despite the association with Di.
