    dedicated fileservers with a fancy web front end. SANs on the other hand
    seem to require shed loads of dedicated fibre, switches and front end
    servers before the user even get a look in at their data.

    Not really. A SAN could quite reasonably use iSCSI, with not a hint of
    fibre channel anywhere in the system.

    As you say, a SAN works at block level, a NAS at file level, but the
    actual network protocol is (now) an irrelevance.
