The road toll is our fault

  1. Speed enforcement won't stop crashes, because people will still drive
If we want to be REALLY safe, lets make the limit 5kph. Even a head on
wouldnt be fatal then. And while we're at it, lets all wrap another layer of
cotton wool around ourselves. I cant believe we're still allowed to do
activites which could cause us harm. Its unacceptable. I blame the
    government, lets sue them.

I do a LOT of kays a week, mostly suburban and city driving with the
occasional long haul on a highway. And the most dangerous driving I see is
*NOT* speeding. In fact, the speeding drivers are normally acting in a more
safe manner because they are actually concentrating on the road ahead
instead of turning around to yell at kids in the back seat, talk to "the
girls" being carried out to lunch, yapping on the phone to organise another
big deal, sitting in the right hand lane with such little situational
awareness that they dont notice the stream of cars banked up behind them
trying to get around, etc etc

    Good story huh

    bah!
I'm in the US, and all of the above is TROO already. Yanks get really
disturbed if anything untoward happens (like weather) and literally carry on
like someone can be blamed for it.

How is taking it easy going to ensure that a car driver will see you?

    Nev.. Guest

So because there are an insignificant number of large busses and trucks
on suburban roads compared to the rest of the vehicle fleet they're not
responsible for the rippling of the road surface approaching traffic
lights? Is it the sedans or 4x4s causing that?

  11. The longer he has to see you there the more chance he will see you but if
you blat past him he has less chance of noticing you.

  12. So do I, (though I never timed myself) and when a bike appears in traffic
and passes you in under 15 sec what happens?

    Rainbow Warrior, Jan 29, 2006
  13. I believe that is true but where do you stop? Why can't someone else say
150kph is ok cause it stops them getting drowsy?
Fatility risks , I suspect would climb higher faster than those less drowsy
    drivers causing accidents, IMO.
And you guys are the drowsy at 100kph group why haven't you guys crashed
    when driving at 100kph?

    Rainbow Warrior, Jan 29, 2006
  14. That's why I prefer not to crash at all, and if I do I'm not planning on
doing it at 140kph to stop microsleeping on the 2 hour drive up the coast.
But would you rather be in a car with good crash performance at 120 or 100
    when rolling?

  15. So they the take their Golfs back to the hire company because they can't get
    into 5th gear?

    Rainbow Warrior, Jan 29, 2006
  16. And would you do it to drive it once a year?
Why not increase safety standards too? If people keep crashing on certain
roads, why shouldn't the limit be dropped?
And plenty of evidence points to injury risks and to degradation in stopping
time at any increased velocity too.
Well if we act like children, it's the way to go.

  17. It's the trucks, watch one stop sometime, probably does more damage than
1000 Barina's in one stop. difference between cars & 4WD is peanuts on that
    scale.

  18. Tell my sister that when they are holding some 18 yo's guts together.

    Rainbow Warrior, Jan 29, 2006
  19. Lets go your way and make the limit 500kph, stuff airbags, red lights and
alcohol limits, they all dumb down drivers.
Good you've seen dangerous things at speeds at the limit, now imagine them
    doing same at 40kph faster.
You think this will all stop happening when cars travel 20kph faster?
    Yep, a fairytale for sure.

    Rainbow Warrior, Jan 29, 2006
  20. In fact, the speeding drivers are normally acting in a more safe manner
You seem to miss the point (possibly deliberately?)...

The _ONLY_ thing GovCo worries about promoting as "bad driving", is
    speeding.

I'm pointing out that speeding is the least of your worries. The most
dangerous situations I see are caused by people who ARENT speeding (and
thus, according to GovCo, arent dangerous).

I never said the speed limit should be raised (though on something like the
M1, it certainly could be!)... I'm saying that there needs to be less
emphasis on "speed kills", and more emphasis on "bad driving kills".

Is any of this sinking through?
