The Real Road Toll

  1. A) no point B) the red light camera flashed, so I'll let it do talking.
    (assuming it is loaded).
Location, Location, Location. I never have an issue with them when I'm
down brissy way. When I'm in shiteney I never have an issue with them.
In NSW on the New England HWY I never have a prolem. In NSW on the
Newell I have never had a problem. The problems seem to be mostly on the
QLD side of the border, on the New England, Cunningham, Gore and Warrego
Highways and in the small cities and towns on those highways. These
areas are where I do my most driving, so are where problems are most
    likely to be seen.
Around Toowoomba I'm certainly not unique in "having trouble with
trucks". The local rag frequently has spots in both letters to the
editor and in the newspaper proper about their antics. A while back one
of their reporters sat at an intersection for an hour and recorded the
number of red-light runners. While I can't remember the figures off my
head, and I don't have the paper handy, it was more than 10 - mostly
trucks. Local talkback radio also often has discussion about some of the
antics too. I don't even have to be in the car to encounter issues, both
myself and my wife have had close run-ins while crossing the road when
trucks have run red lights. In one instance my wife had made it halfway
across the road, before having to scramble out of the way of a truck
running a red light - that's how long it had been red for. Logic would
say they would be more likely to run a red light when going downhill -
because that's when it is harder to stop. On the contrary, I have
noticed it is when they are going uphill that they are more likely to do
    it.

i disagree completely with running reds when theyre already red, but uphill
take a truck a lot longer to move than downhill. a lot of them go through
yellows just so they dont take 30seconds to get to 35kmh and ohld up
traffic. running actual reds though isnt a good idea, unless its very, very
obvious no cars are coming from the other directions.

Some people only count Yankee bodies. Recently saw some figures that
said the Yanks won in Vietnam because they only lost 58,000 or
something and the North lost several million. Apparently South
    Vietnamese bodies aren't counted.

And yes, the Yanks have now lost about the same number in retaliation
to 9/11 as they lost in 9/11. I'm sure that makes sense somehow.

A few lives lost is the price of 'freedom', apparently.

GB, picking fights with yanks on usenet about 'freedom' should
be an olympic sport I reckon.

I wonder whats going on in that area to make all the truckies act
differently there compared to everywhere else?
I see many vehicles running red lights (in Melb.), some of them are
trucks but for every truck that runs a red light I would see 20 cars
    running a red.

Afghanistan is a retaliation to 9/11.
    Iraq is just an exercise.

This is my experience as a motorcyclist too.
I very very rarely feel threatened or troubled by trucks but I'm shitscared
    of cars.
Truckies always indicate. They're the first to dip their headlights. They
    stay in their own lane.
Unlike car-drivers, Truckies KNOW what happens if they **** up!

They have a professional attitude toward driving. We have something in
common with them. We are minority road users, often unfairly blamed for
incidents and often given the treatment by coppers. Car drivers in general
hate us and the feeling is mutual.

If a truckie indicates to me that it's safe to pass, after passing I'll
indicate once right then once left to say thanks. A little display of
    solidarity if you like...

  17. If a truckie indicates to me that it's safe to pass, I'll make sure for
myself that it's safe to pass before attempting to pass.
And then I'll acknowledge my thanks with either a wave or a indicator
    'wing waggle'.
