Lights change from red to green in Holland and it annoys the **** out of me.
There's *always* somebody that it takes by surprise and they just sit there
at the green light, not having noticed the change.
The UK colour sequence is much better and gives people more chance to
realise that something is going on.

In India they actually have a little counter on some lights, telling you
how many seconds until they'll go green. I'm always having to resist the
Murray Walker-stylee "GO! GO! GO!" when the counter hits zero.

Actually, the "start" is usually obscured by a huge cloud of smoke
    anyway.

No it's not, for two good reasons.

Firstly, the term "anarchy" comes from the Greek, "an archos" - without
leaders and therefore means exactly that; an absence of leaders, rather than
    an absence of rules.

Secondly, the term "ruled" was clearly used to mean "dominant", rather than
    being related to rules anyway.

or to put it another way, an absense of of rulers (in the dominant
    sense)
Ruled by whom? Rulers, in the dominant sense.

Do you not see that the two halves of the phrase contradict each
    other?

No they do not, if anarchy is the predominant force within a given community
then it "rules", does it not?

The fact that anarchy governs does not, in any way, imply that there must be
    rulers involved.

    Twenty seven seconds. Hmmm...

Let's say a six inch dick, with a "cycle time" of half a second, allow a
second for the vinegar stroke, that'd make distance travelled about...
    53 feet?

Coincidence? Reader, that's for *you* to decide.

Indeed it does - so you have an "absence of rulers" doing the ruling -
    self contradictory.
Anarchy governs, so it's a ruler.

Why? Why are rulers required to have rules in place?

Look at ukrm. Nobody rules ukrm, but we have rules that are enforced by
    common consent.

Anyway, in the phrase "an archos" the rulers being referred to are clearly
individuals, whereas anarchy is an abstract concept, which wouldn't count as
    a ruler in that sense.

I appreciate that it _looks_ like an oxymoron; it's just not.

They aren't when "rules" is a noun, as you've just used it. When it is
used as a verb, which is what you did further above when you said 'it
"rules"', you can interpret it in two ways. We've chosen different
    ones.
In your opinion, no. It would in mine.

I can't see either of us pursuading the other, so I'll let you have
    the last word!

Hmm... This mornings commute in the car, at South Mimms where I want
to go from A1(N) to M25(E). At the lights, there's an artic. lorry
in the 'M25' lane, a Merc. 190E in the 'Services' lane. I decide that
both cars can easily get ahead of lorry before the M25 on-slip and move
over to slot in behind the Merc.
The lights go amber and you can see the lorry anticipating green,
the car driver doesn't look close to being aware of any change.
The lights go green and the lorry is off. The Merc eventually
realises that the lights are green and inches slowly forwards,
being in 2nd gear after about 18 inches of movement. Christ, I had
to boot the car to eventually get ahead of the lorry and still managed
to unfortunately cut him up. :eek:/

Oh, did I mention that the Merc was being driven by a woman?
