  2. So, was it someone dropping off their brat at Wesley? A bit further up,
and it would probably have been a nurse getting off nightshift. (Alfred
    hospital)

Riding in the wet at night can become even more exciting.
Riding to work one evening, uphill on the highway, halfway around a tight
left-hander I suddenly had both wheels slip out on my K-75.
Managed to get my foot out in time to keep her off the deck but came within
inches of drifting under an oncoming Kenworth.
On arriving at work for a change of underwear, an earlier arriving workmate
informed me he had just followed a diesel 4x4 who it seems had recently
filled his tank & failed to replace the cap. Each time he went around a left
hand bend he was leaving a trail of fuel. I was able to confirm this on
checking the scene in daylight on my way home in the morning. To this day I
don't know how I saved it.

I'd have thought that the reason we're all here is that we're totally
*unsuitable* for other forums. Except Clem of course, he's allowed in
    aus.cars from time to time.

So splitting between moving traffic and parked cars is legal?

Of course, back in my day it was properly dark at night, not
this half-hearted darkness you get these days.

*waves* Not that I've ever noticed. Of course, perhaps I was
    distracted by the tramtracks ...

Only thing to remember if you do this is to pay attention to what is
behind you and choose your moments to warm the brakes. You don't want
the person behind you getting used to seeing your brake light coming on
    when you're not really braking.

That's probably a good thing when you're in moving traffic, but when
you're lanesplitting it's more than just brakes isn't it? You have to be
at a point of alertness where you're looking into the mirrors of the
cars you're about to pass to see what the drivers in front of you are
doing. If they're looking around or their heads are moving, (semi)
frantically, then they're probably about to do something drastic.
When it's wet it makes it all the more complicated.

Indeed, back then the water was soooo wet that duck's arses
weren't quite watertight, and the poor things had to crawl
along the bottom of lakes like platypoides.
