OK, so it looks like the free sunsite news server has pulled the plug on
    aus.moto.

Bigpond is missing most of the posts. (mine lists 8 posts since
    lunchtime yesterday).

So what's the next best (free) news server Google is a bit of a pain.
Talkaboutmotorcycles is sort of OK, but does some odd stuff.

Ozemail have changed to a new server - try freenews.ozemail.com.au

Of course, they didn't make an announcement anywhere except in a new
    newsgroup they created called please.now.use.freenews.ozemail.com.au

  6. Change your news server to freenews.ozemail.com.au or
freenews.iinet.net.au (they're both the same server).

    prk.

With the imminent death of aus.moto (and USENET), maybe a couple of
popular bike forums could resurrect the old FIDONET echo mail system
(or similar concept of mail propagation in the BBS days)... and so
have a group similar to aus.moto that is "propagated" among these
    bike forums.

The difficulty would be getting support of a group of forums, but the
    technical solution would be easy.

    cheers

While there will undoubtably be attempts to exercise further control,
the genie is out of the bottle, there's too many ways for people to
communicate in difficult to decrypt formats for there to be much chance
of the gov't getting real control again.
Well you can ride your diesel hogly if you like, I'll run alcohol
(ethanol) in an otto cycle engine with electric regen brakes and
    electric assist thanks.

    JL
(considering how cheap all that sugar in QLD is we should be following
Brazil's example and forcing ethanol use thruogh the ADRs)

If your ISP peers with pipe then you could use
news.melbourne.pipenetworks.com (insert the capital city of the state
you are in for non vic areas). [1]

    G-S

[1] Most major (and many smaller) ISP's peer with pipenetworks (but with
some ISP's it isn't free content)

    I most definitely will not!

In keeping with my retro ideals I will be running a bio-diesel
single-cylinder _chain_ driven thumper designed and built by Enfield
    India ;-P

  11. BigPond works fine for me. Occasionally it hicups and they are blissfully
unaware of the problem until you whinge to them about paying for a service
they are failing to supply. They then tell you that nothing is wrong and it
must be your settings and they don't support linux but it mysteriously
comes good shortly thereafter. I haven't any problems for about two of your
    last servers.

  12. There is no reason to reinvent the wheel by resurrecting the horrible
nightmare Fido-net was. What is needed is a proper nntp feed and then get
the groups you want. So you ask where to get a nntp feed? I would try
one of the Usenet backbone servers for recommendations. There has to be
some leaf nodes out there willing to feed you. There is no point in
ressurcting the Fidonet or UUCP network. If one person gets a nntp feed
    he can feed others.

If there are some censorship problems then running nntp over port 80 or
port 443 is one solution. I know of no technology that could content filter
    SSL encrypted traffic.

I am glad someone did. It was OK at the beginning but then the number of
idiots increased. I soon wrote the whole thing off. Usenet was highbrow
stuff in comparison. The trolls were easy to filter and fun to mess with
at times. Then again there was Mark Ethan Smith. What a kook.
