    Police excuse, so it's official!

Local rag has a story about an off-duty Lincs Police
Inspector who killed a father of 2 when he ploughed into
the back of his stationery car, was convicted of Dangerous
Driving and sentenced to 36 weeks in the slammer.

His appeal is based upon the argument that 'expert
evidence' should have been allowed at his trial which said
    that he
"may have experienced a phenomenon known as 'Inattentional
Blindness' - when people genuinely look out but still do
    not spot hazards"

  4. Strangley, I had just that kind of thing today, as I came down my road I
saw a pair of cyclists coming up. I moved over but was slightly
disturbed to find in retrospect I didn't reduce my speed any. There was
plenty of room and they probably didn't think anything of it, but it's
something I usually do on this road.

    Donnie spoke:

The poor chap is trying to save his job!
If he went down he would loose it!

This is Lincs plod here - you know, the ones who are just one step behind
Brundstrom in their 'think of the children' attitude towards road safety
    and devil-span motorcyclists!

He was probably too busy keeping an eye out for the hidden speed cameras
    that litter the county.

A couple of weeks ago I was driving at night, with a slight drizzle, and
ahead of me was a cyclist who had only a flashing red light, not a solid
light as required. I found that I had no way of properly judging the
distance and came very close to taking him very roughly from behind.

Some advocates of flashing reds actually feel that this confusion is a
good thing, on the basis that if drivers aren't certain of what
they're seeing, they'll tend to slow down.

Not a view to which I subscribe, and while flashing reds may be OK in
town where there's generally ambient light, so the message is just "I
am here", on country roads I'd always want a solid red to give some
perspective, in an "I'm occupying space on the road" way.

Im confused now. Im assuming it was 2 way traffic, you were on your
side and they were on theirs? Plenty of room like you say, so why would
you slow down in the first place?

  9. 'Cos the road's barely wider than single-track. About a track anna half,
    in fact.

I did it coming home on the bike (familiar road thing?). I looked past the
cars I intended overtaking, pulled out into the "wrong" side of the road and
then I saw the car coming towards me. [1] I barely got back onto my on side
    of the road.

[1] I say "saw" but I actually screamed like a teenage girl at a fucking
    Take That concert.
